Can't decide on a florist

I've met with four different florists, and I'm not in love with any of them.  I think a large part of it is that I don't really know exactly what I want, so I feel like I need a little more guidance, which i don't really feel like I've gotten.  Although I also wonder if my budget id the issue.

I was wanting to spend no more than $1000 on flowers (I have only one bridesmaid and two groomsmen, but need about 20 centerpieces).  Three places have given me quotes around there, but weren't very good at helping me decide what i want.  One person was great at having opinions and really asking questions about my wedding to understand the feel and what would work for us, but the quote was about $1500.

Any suggestions?  Should I just swallow it and go with the more expensive one?  Do I need to do more research on my own to decide what I want?  Is it unreasonable to expect a florist to help me figure out what I want and what works for our budget- and to be honest about what might not be a good idea?

  • I would suggest exploring what you want further. The knot and Pinterest are both great sites to find a lot of different pictures of flowers. If you could bring different inspiration to the florist they'd be able to guide you better. If they know your taste I think they'd have an easier time figuring out what will work in your budget.

  • I agree with PP, find more inspiration, take pictures with you to your appointment. Do you have a theme? Colors? Types of flowers you love? Did you ask the florist what type of flower is is season in April and will be within your budget? Do you have an idea if you want low or high centerpieces, what do you want your flowers to be in? HTH!

  • I also agree with PP. Try to find inspiration and work from there. I think if you are creative with your choices of flowers you should be able to stay in that budget. Our budget was around $1400 and I'm getting 6 bouquets plus mine, 15 centerpieces, bouts for 6 guys and wrist coursages/bouts for parents and grandparents. And the bouquets were way more expensive then the centerpieces. I think it's totally reasonable to find a florist that will work with your budget, but you will likely have to be flexible on what you want. ie tall centerpieces are twice as expensive as small centerpieces.

Another option that my florist gave me to cut costs, but we didn't end up going that way was to do half the tables with small centerpieces and half with candles. Doing something like that might get you closer to your budget.

    Good luck!

I visited three florists and I went with the one who seemed to know her stuff the best and was willing to get what I wanted.  The florist I ended up booking even had sample flowers in my wedding colours displayed when I went for the consult.

I agree with PP to have some inspiration to show the florist your style and taste.  I found a couple florists I visited will do up a sample centerpiece a month before to make sure you know what it will look like. Also, complimentary throwaway bouquets are sometimes included.

Hydrangeas are very cost effective for centerpieces, not sure if you considered those.  Also, some florists will allow you to bring your own vases for them to use which may save money or if you "rent/borrow" the vases from the florist have them tie the centerpiece flowers so they can be lifted out at the end of the night to take home.

  • As a florist's daughter, I get to see both sides of picking out flowers for my wedding. Definitely bring any ideas/pictures/colors you want or like with you will help tremendously! After that, the florist should be more than willing to give suggestions on types of flowers, styles you could use, etc.  Joheryl is right, if you bring your own vases, it does cut down on the cost. If you have a budget you want to stick with, tell the florist. They should be willing to work with you and give suggestions on flowers that still look nice, but may be less expensive then others. If you have any other questions, I know flower shops differ on prices, but PM me! Good luck!
