Try to go in the middle of the day to avoid longer lines. It's really hit or miss from what I hear, but usually later in the day it's more crowded as people get off work early to take care of those things.

I would try to get there around 1 or 2 because people who were there on their lunch break are gone by then. And I would call ahead and just ask what you need to bring and ask them what time would be best for them for you to go up there.

How far in advance from your wedding date can you get your marriage license? I know if you get it too far out it expires, or something to that nature.

The cost is $71 cash. They are good for 30 days but have a 72 hour hold before they can be used.

Make sure you obtain the license in the county where you are getting married (we are going to Winfield Inn in Kyle which is actually Hays County.)
The cost for Travis and Hays is around $71-72 of which $11-12 is local fees. If you complete a premarital course like those you can find at www.twogetherintexas.com the $60 in state fees and the 72 hour waiting period is waived. There is no waiver for the 30day limit on how early you can get the license but you can complete a qualifying course within a year of your wedding date and its certificate will still be valid to waive the $60 fee and holding period.

<div>I was told that it doesn't matter where you got it, as long as you got it in the state of Texas. I called specifically to ask if we could pick it up in any county in Texas, and they said it didn't matter. I would check your information (I will also check mine... the lady I talked to could very well have been a total idiot).</div>

From what I understand most of Texas has the same laws from County to County but this is not the case in all States, just to be safe I would do it specifically in the county where you are holding your ceremony because they may require registration for your officiant at their county office. This is what I found when researching laws around having a friend/family member officate.
You can also just sign an Informal Marriage Agreement and be common law, or just introduce yourself as married for that matter lol. We wont be doing that just so we can be safe, I dont know if common law counts if you leave Texas for a state that doesn't honor common law marriage.

</div><div>Ok so then it doesn't matter as far as Texas is concerned, but it might matter if you leave the state. Thanks for that clarification. No, we will not be doing a common law marriage either.
