  I'd start by checking your local boards for reccomendations on local make up artists and hair stylists. The trial run isn't so much to interview potential artists you shoudl pick one based on reccomendations and looking at their portfolio. What the test run is good for is to see try out what your planning on having done to your hair and make up on the day of the wedding becuase just since it looks good in a picture doesn;t mean it works for you. And to make sure you and the stylist are on the same page of what you are wanting and can work out the kinks ahead of time.

  I am a makeup artist and the way I usually handle brides is by doing a trial before the wedding. This allows time to meet and discuss the look, location, and time schedule. Most makeup artists & hair stylists will include a trial as part of their services, however, here will be a charge (e.g. usually 30% to 50% of the day of total) for this. Trials are not free.

  
  

  Also, please keep in mind that not all makeup artists do hair and vice versa. You may be booking two separate people to provide these services. Please do not assume that one person will handle both, unless clearly specified. 

  
  

  Here are some guidelines: 

  1. Have some ideas about what kind of look(s) you are interested in on hand to show your stylist(s). Use pictures for reference.

  2. Talk about the style/ theme of your wedding. Think about the time of day and overall feel of your event (e.g. casual daytime/ clean & natural look, formal evening/ glamorous look, specific style/ old Hollywood look, etc.)

  3. If you have your veil and/or headpiece available, make sure you let your hair stylist see it and use it during your trial.

  4. Be honest. If you are unhappy with your look(s) and want to change something or everything, let your stylist(s) know! We want to make you happy. 

  5. Consider your time schedule!!! A makeup artist will need at least 30 to 45 solid minutes to work on your face and a hair stylist will need 45 to 60 solid minutes depending on the hair style you choose. That means you are in the chair! Not getting up to talk to your Mom, or deal with the vendors, or make phone calls, or eat! We cannot complete your look if you are constantly moving around or leaving the chair. I know this may sound ridiculous, but people do this all the time! 

  6. If there is any possibility that someone else in your bridal party (i.e. MOH, Bridesmaids, Moms, etc.) will want to have either hair or makeup (or both) then PLAN AHEAD! If you only hire your stylist(s) to take care of you, then that is all they will plan for. If you suddenly change your mind at the last minute (i.e. night before or day of) to have all your bridesmaids and your Mom get their hair and makeup done too... it will not happen. Stylists plan and prep for each job (because it is a JOB) and if there are more than a certain number of people to complete within a certain time frame then we plan accordingly. That may mean bringing an assistant to make sure everyone is done and ready by the time you've specified. 

  6. Make sure the space that you plan to have your makeup and hair done has plenty of LIGHT!!!! And a power source for the hairstylist's hot tools. 

  
  

  Basically, just communicate. The more information you have to share with your stylist(s) the more comfortable you will be and vice versa. We can't read your mind and we don't use magic wands. If you give us a clear idea and time schedule for what you need, we will deliver.

  I'm so picky about make up and so scared that someone will make me look like a clown.  I have engagement pictures of Thursday so I'm going to try out a make up artist and hope she is good.  As for hair I have a hair stylist that I trust with my hair so I'm going to use her.
