Help with menu!!

I need ideas on what to serve the guests.  What did you have or plan on having?

I was going to put some things out there that I love:

Raspberry vinaigrette salad
Selection of dinner breads and butter spreads
Crab Cakes
Baked sweet potato drizzling in butter and brown sugar
Grilled asparagus.

Not sure if that is a weird combo or not to people's liking.

Re: Help with menu!!

  • I think that sounds like a nice combination.  That sweet potato sounds delicious.

    A few things to consider--
    1. Not everyone likes raspberry vinaigarette, so I would have it on the side and also offer balsamic or something like that.
    2. I don't know that crab cakes are that popular, so I would offer another protein option.  I would also have a vegetarian option, and see if any of your guests will need other special meals (vegan, GF, etc.).

Have you already found a caterer?
  • Well, remember that there are people who can't eat shellfish, and there are also those few like me who are quite certain Satan had direct involvement in the creation of sweet potatoes.

While I think you have nice selections, I would consider adding some kind of entree that isn't shellfish or fish and white potatoes.

Whatever you choose make sure it appeals to the people you are inviting to your wedding.  You pay an awful lot of money to feed those people so you want to make sure you have selections that will get eaten and not thrown away.

Agree with Milk Duds. If you love crab cakes I would suggest having them during cocktail hour and having chicken, beef, etc. plus a vegetarian option (eggplant parm, pasta, etc.) for dinner. You will appease more appetites this way.

The rest sounds delicious! I would probably have a few more options for salad dressings but other than that it sounds yummy.
  • I agree with the others regarding the crab cakes and sweet potatoes. I LOVE crab cakes, and could eat them every night of the week. But not everyone feels the same way. Many people have shellfish allergies and some so severe they can't even be in the same room! Many people also don't like sweet potatoes.

Sometimes you have to think about what your guests will like, and yes, you have to play it safe in the selections. But you can still have great gourmet choices amongst the selections. I'm assuming you are having plated service and not a buffet.

We had a buffet, but the plated version of it would have been:

"Michigan salad", with baby greens, blue cheese, candied pecans and dried cherries. This is our all time favorite salad. You could have the dressings on the table, we did have raspberry vinagraitte, but you could also have another choice

Chicken piccata in a white wine/lemon sauce (without the capers). Chicken is always a safe choice, beef would be the other.

Red potatoes with parmesan, garlic and rosemary

Green beans with a very light garlic flavor and butter (but asparagus is nice too)

Because it was a buffet, we also had a pasta, penne with red marinara sauce with no meat. You may want to think about a veggie option for guests that don't eat meat.

    Good luck.

  • I like everything but the sweet potatoes and I do agree that crab cakes might be better as an appetizer than the main course (I don't know why, but around here I never see them as a main entree and often see them as a first course).

If you switched the sweet potato for a risotto or pasta or something that would be a pretty sweet menu in my book. =)
