Brown Tuxes: A Do or Don't

Hello -

I am considering chocolate bm dresses but not crazy about the black tux and brown vest/tie combo. Thoughts on Brown tuxes with a kiwi vest/test?

There is no area on the girls dresses for any kind of sash or color splash. But flowers were going to be a mix of eggplant, mango and chartreuse colors. My dress is ivory.

Is this too monochromatic feeling for attire and pics...not enough ooopmh? Does it sound ugly? Help!

Re: Brown Tuxes: A Do or Don't

  • I have seen brown tuxes look very nice, however, the BM were wearing maroon dresses. I'm not sure how it would look if both the BM and GM wear brown.

FWIW, it's not necessary for the GM vests/ties to match the BM dresses. The GM would look great wearing a classic black tux.

  • I love it!

The flowers will give the girls a pop of color, and you could consider adding a fresh flower to their hair...you could invite them to choose from a few pair of shoes in your color pallete to give them another pop of color.

The groomsmen, and your hubby to be can could wear mango or chartruese ties so they dont look too plain!

We are going with brown as our accent color instead of black too! I'm not a fan of black....the guys will be wearing brown corduroy sports coats white shirts, and burnt orange or leaf green ties, and wearing their own kakhi pants. The girls will be wearing burnt orange dresses with a leaf green sash, and they have brown cardigans for when it gets chilly...

My dress is ivory too, and I think brown works sooo much better with ivory than black!

    Go for it!
  • Personally I'm not all that into the brown dresses with brown tuxes, it does come across a little monochromatic to me. I'm not saying it can't be done well, I just haven't really seen it.

I would look through the "Wedding Colors" and then "Brown Weddings" (obviously)section on here, I think there's some pictures of brown dresses and brown tuxes. See what you think. If you love it, go for it.
  • I don't like brown tuxes, and IMO it's ridiculous to have the guys in brown JUST because the women are in brown dresses. That level of matchy-matchy is completely unnecessary. Black tuxes will coordinate with any color scheme. That's why they've been in style for so long and that's why they're the standard for formal menswear.

If your FI loves the brown tux because he truly likes the color, though, go for it. That's a matter of personal preference. But IMO a black tux is so much more classier and better-looking. (Although I think a tan or grey suit would be O.K. if the wedding is not formal enough to require a tux.)

I would not have brown tuxes with kiwi vests. That's WAY too much going on, and I think it'd look really stupid (and I would dislike kiwi vests under a black tux, too, but if I had to pick one or the other I'd definitely do black tuxes if you insist on kiwi vests). I would stick with brown vests and ties, either a dark brown or a light latte-colored brown or a champagne color, if your FI really wants the brown tux.

If I were in your shoes, I'd do black tuxes with white shirts no matter what. Then either a black vest and tie; some shade of brown for the vest and tie (either chocolate or latte); a silver vest and tie; a champagne or a subtle gold vest and tie; or a black vest with a kiwi tie for a little pop of color underneath.

But I would absolutely let your FI make the final decision himself.

Brown tuxes with brown dresses? Wow, that's a lot of brown.

I think brown tuxes are ugly and look dated. So I'm not a fan to start with. But head to toe brown on everyone is TOO MUCH.

I'd do the brown vests and ties if you insist on matching but matching is NOT necessary. You could have the guys do a champagne or gold colour for the vests. Or alternatively, put the girls in the kiwi colour.

  • Ooh goodness, I vote no to brown tuxes. In fact, all I can think of is that if you have brown tuxes & kiwi vests, the men will look... like a kiwi.
  • Big giant NO to brown tuxes. We had chocolate brown dresses and the guys wore black tuxes with black vests and ties. Very classic looking.

  • we are doing brown tuxes with a teal tie. my dresses are green though. everyone is saying no brown dresses with brown tuxes. what about people that choose black tuxes and black dresses? its the same thing right? still monochromatic. What I did was I put on one of my BM dresses and had FI put on the brown. We saw what it would look like. looked very nice in my opinion. so if you can do that..try that out. however you can never go wrong with classic black. its you and FI's decision in the end! go with what you want! its your wedding.
  • I personally don't think tuxes should be any color other than black. I agree that they look dated. I just like the classic elegance of a black tux. I also agree that the guys don't have to be wearing brown vests. Most weddings I go to do not having men wearing vests/ties of the same color as the BM dresses. My BMs wore dark purple and the GMs wore a dark silver/pewter color for vests and ties. I think coordination (not matchy-matchy) is key.

To your comment above - did the maroon look nice with the brown tuxes?

I was contemplating wine in lieu of the chocolate brown for the bm dresses. Although the classic black seems to go well here too.

    Thanks.
