Yes, I had a custom dress made for my first wedding.  It was not a traditional bridal gown, though.  What kind of ideas are you looking for?
  • The only stories I have heard are from women who tried to get a custom made designer knock off made overseas for a HUGE discount.  They got a cheap & poorly made dress, I wouldn't recommend it.
  • I had one made for my first wedding in 1985.  Everyone was wearing dresses like Princess Diana's, and I went for a tea length, 40's inspired satin dress--totally different than anything I could find.  Funny thing, there are dresses that resemble what I had then that are being sold now.

If you have a seamstress you trust, and know what looks good on your body type, it might be a good idea, but if you're looking to save money, you may be disappointed.

  • Go to a fabric store and look in the books at wedding dress patterns for ideas - some of them have one dress with 4-6 different looks.  A skilled seamtress should be able to mix-n-match if you want something unique and different.

What is your timeline?  I would call around and interview seamtresses first, to find out what their price range is for wedding dresses, as well as how much time they need.  They should have pics of their past work also.

Best of luck finding your dress!

  • A good friend is making my dress for me. I looked at dresses online and found the bits and pieces I liked and showed them to her. She went to her fabric store a looked for patterns to mix and match to get the look we wanted. The design and making process has taken almost a year and I cannot wait ti see the final dress

  • Wow! Thanks for everyone who has responded. I have a picture of a dress that I absolutely love. What's a good price range to spend on a dress? And does anyone have any recommendations for a good seemstressm or company in Caliornia to get my dress made at? Thanks for all your help. I've got till may 2013 to get it all together.
  • Hi uku!

There are local boards, in the panel to the left of this thread.  <--------

A lot of the price depends upon the fabric you choose (antique lace, v. satin, v. cotton), and how complex the design is.  If it's a sheath dress, that's a lot simpler than a ballgown or a circle skirt with a lot of detail or lace.  You should get a quote from your seamstress or tailor prior to having anything done.

If I were you, I'd try to find a similar type of dress to try on--to make sure you like the style on you. I found that the styles I really liked didn't look very good on me!  So, I ended up with something totally different than I originally thought I'd purchase.

  • I also had my dress made.  I actually found a pattern that was exactly what I wanted and had the dress made in white velvet (my wedding was in December).  I got recommendations for seamstresses from the store where I bought the fabric and from several local bridal shops and then I started interviewing them.  The charges varied a lot.  I selected one whose price was in the mid-range but she was also the one I liked and trusted the most.  My gown was gorgeous, and finished on time.  My wedding gown was the most expensive dress I have ever owned, but as wedding gowns go, relatively inexpensive.  As far as time, I met with the seamstress in early September and my dress was finished iin early December so it took about 10 weeks to complete.  The biggest advantage was that I got exactly what I wanted.
  • hmmm.  I already responded, but not sure what happened to that post.  The cost will depend on how intricate what you want is, and the fabric.  If you want an antique lace, you'll be paying a lot more than your would for taffeta (sp?).

When I had my dress made in 1985, I paid about the same as a lot of my friends did for their dresses with trains, etc.

I would suggest that go into a shop and try on what you imagine yourself in; I thought I would want a particular type of dress, but when I tried it on, it didn't look very good.  Good luck!

  • Also, you'll want to check the local boards for a dressmaker near you.  Look on the left hand side of the screen <--------------
