cake or cupcake?

I want to do cupcakes, but have a 2 tier cake so I still have something to cut into. My fiance basically feels like if we do cupcakes... we need enough cake IN ADDITION TO enough cupcakes for everyone cause people will feel like they're "missing something" if they don't have even just a bite of cake. (That doesn't make sense cause the whole point of cupcakes is to get a smaller cake...)

I'm really torn about this because I can see what he's saying... but if that's the case then why would I bother getting cupcakes at all?! I really want the cupcakes cause they give a little more fun to the dessert plus we'll be able to get them in 5 flavors, but the cake is really only going to be in just one flavor... And the cupcake designs I have are friggen adorable.

How do you feel when you're a guest at a wedding?

We're doing cupcakes!  We're actually doing mini cupcakes and they're very reasonable I think ($.75 ea).  We are going with a bunch of flavors too.  We're getting pistachio w/pistachio frosting (FI's favorite), lemon w/raspberry frosting, vanilla w/chai frosting, carrot w/cream cheese, red velvet w/cream cheese, chocolate w/Nutella...I think that's all of them!  We figure with the minis people can try more than one flavor too!  We still have to get a small cake to cut though.  Unfortunately, the girls we're going through for the cupcakes only do cupcakes.

I agree that the whole point of cupcakes is to have a smaller cake. Cupcake towers are so popular right now and too cute! I personally wouldn't feel like I was missing anything if I got a cupcake instead of cake.

I feel like MOST people don't even eat the wedding cake!  We're doing basically the same thing - small tiered wedding cake for us to cut into, and then a big spread of Italian desserts (cannoli, cookies, etc.).  Cupcakes are so much easier to eat anyway! More accesable...

BTW... I think we're wedding date twins!  07.07.12!

I would eat either... or both.  But I'm a pig and I love food.  I am definitely the type of person that would feel the need to try both.... but... if I didn't have a choice and was only given one, then I would be happy with that too... as long as I had something.

I think the key would be to keep the 2 tiered cake veeeeeryyyy small.  Like One tier to keep for the anniversary and one tier with just enough for the bride, groom and parents maybe?  Then it's not like 1/2 of your guests could have cake while the rest only get a cupcake... ya know?

Were doing the mini cupcakes as well with a small top tier to cut into and save.

I'm actually baking for a wedding in June. They are doing cupcakes as well. 3 flavors with all the same frosting and a small 2 tier 8' cake to cut the cake they are cutting is basically for them and WP. Cupcakes will be for guests... 1 per with a handful extra to accommodate those who love sweets. Theres no need to give people the option and you are right 50% of them don't even get to the cake anyway :)

    Crystal, you're a baker?  That's awesome!

I love all things cake (including cupcakes).  At a wedding with both, I would go for a cupcake because they usually taste better than wedding cake.  I wouldn't take one of each unless there was tons left over and it was really good!

You all are making me re-think my cake situation, and I'm hungry and cupcakes sound good!
