Is there still a "thing" about wearing red to a wedding?

I don't think there is, but I'm just making sure. I'm going to a wedding in CA on Saturday, and I'm still in Italy as of today, and all my clothes are in storage, so I decided to buy a dress while I was in Naples, and due to a language barrier with the attendant and the overall insanity that takes hold of me when strangers look at me while I'm in my underwear, I ended up walking out with a dress that is FIRE ENGINE HARLOT RED. Please reassure me that everyone won't be fluttering their fans and talking about what a loose woman I am.

Re: Is there still a "thing" about wearing red to a wedding?

  • Well, it won't be because of the red dress.

IIRC, unless the people getting married are Chinese, you're good to go.
  • i feel like at one point, Red was like Black - just not worn at weddings.  but its ok now.  many put their BM's in red.
  • Well, then call me Scarlett Harlot, because I wore a red dress to a friend's wedding 10 years ago. I stood out, and I'm sure my Laura Ashley-dressed friend thought naughty things about me.

    I'd think you're okay.

  • I have an awesome red dress that I wear to weddings all the time.

  • You're good. :-)

Did someone say a few weeks ago that wearing gray means you're mourning the wedding? Or that you slept with the groom? Cause I'm thinking about wearing gray to a wedding next week and I've never even met the groom.

Ha! We should make up a whole list of ridiculous meanings for wedding guest colors, and then just assume that all of our guests ascribe to them.

I hear if you wear purple, you slept with the groom's dad.

  • Or Indian - indian brides wear red too.
but I don't think many of the "rules" really apply anymore.

  • Well now I kinda want to see this dress. :)

I'm assuming it's not a very harlotty dress, just the color, so wear it and have fun! I'm sure it will catch people's eye, but in a good way.

  • Nope.  MIL wore red to our wedding and she is definitely not a ho.

I'll post a pic after I wear it to the wedding - it'll probably look better that way than if I give you the MySpace hostel special right now. :)

It's not all that harlotty, other than the color, and it falls above my knees, which is shorter than I usually wear because I'm tall and pale. But I'll rock it with pride.

  • Seriously, though, I definitely need to make sure somebody comes with me when I go wedding dress shopping, when the time comes. As soon as I'm in a situation where a saleslady is barging in and out of the changing room while I'm in my skivvies, I start getting very flustered and making questionable decisions.

  • Are you asking me to go wedding dress shopping with you, Sarah? Because that's what I'm hearing. ;)

I hear you though, especially if you're in a place like DB (where I got my dress from). I think it's okay to just keep telling yourself, "I can always come back. The dresses will still be here tomorrow." Even if you end up going 5 times to the same place, so what? When else will you be as concerned with one piece of clothing for the rest of your life?

  • Hehe, that would be awesome! I'd enjoy it.

But yeah... I'll just have to take things slowly. I can get way too pressured by people.

  • Aw, I hear you. Your plan to bring someone along is smart, and you will have a great time! I had to take my sister to be my "She said she didn't like it, okay?" person. I'm sure you know at least one super-assertive person with good taste.

Hahaha, I should probably bring somebody other than my mom, then. I went once with her just to get some ideas of what I might like, and she pretty much cries whatever I put on. Maybe I should go for a mom/FMIL tag team. :)

  • What is this, 1847? Do people really have such concerns in this day and age? The color doesn't matter. Just make sure your ankles aren't showing, you don't want the church ladies to whisper
