Photographer help Please

Is it just me, or is picking a photographer the most daunting wedding task at hand?Let's face it, when everything is over, pictures are the only thing I'm gonna have left. I'm been looking at photographers' web sites for hours and they are all begining to look the same. I'm looking to spend around $1600 for photography, including an engagement session in a photo journalistic style. I don't care about about albums as long as I get rights to my images. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
...Also, any thoughts on videography? What's reasonable to pay for this? and is it worth it?

Re: Photographer help Please

  • I went to the Wendy's Bridal Show today and there were over 20 photographers there. After a while my head was swimming. I saw prices varying from 900 to 6,000. I think 1,600 is doable provided you let the photog know of your budget. To me there are always deals to be had, but you have to tell the photog your budget and what you want included. They try to push their prices, but if you push back they may price down.

As far as the video is concerned, there is this fusion videography that I saw being pushed. It's video but done by photographers instead of videographers. I am going to the Sharonville show next week and will discuss fusion prices in depth.
  • I loved our photographer. He did a great job and his prices were really good.

  • seriously, look and see if rachel spears is available on your date. she's right around 1600 and i was happier with my photos than i had expected and i expected to be blown away. and she's a doll. there has been a lot of talk on here about her. she's really really fun and it's one of the few things i'm happy i spent that much money on. ;)
  • My photographer has been amazing to work with (We did our e-pics in the fall, june is wedding). her name is Sheila Castle, she worked with rachael spears for a long time as her 2nd shooter, and now she is on her own and a bit cheaper than rachael -- but has the same level of skill and often times rachael is the 2nd shooter to her weddings. Look up Sheila Castle Photography on facebook, we had a blast with our e-pics.

Good luck though, it was the hardest for me because you have the photos in 50 years when you really dont' have the cake, dress, centerpieces, etc but yet I was on a strict budget too. Good Luck!
  • We went with Daniel Micheal. Honestly we just met with a bunch and decided who we liked personality wise the most. Because you will be spending all day with them so you better like them, Ya know. plus we got a lot for our money and they had good options

  • Totally second Rachel spears photography. We looked at the girl who worked for her too and while she is talented, you can tell Rachel has been doing this for awhile and we felt more confident in her talent/experience. In the <$2000 market I think she is the best in town.

[QUOTE]I know exactly how you feel! I am actually a freelance wedding photographer in the Cincinnati area and I have recently begun helping my best friend plan her wedding...and oh my goodness! I never knew how overwhelming making a photography choice could be for couples. As a photographer (and someone who is also in the middle of planning a wedding), I recommend going with someone who you feel comfortable with, who will absolutely without a doubt be giving you all of your digital files and who is incredibly proficient in photo editing software. Also, DO NOT let anyone talk you into an "all day package." Typically, photographers only spend between 5 and 7 hours actually taking photographs during your wedding day. The whole "all day package" deal usually just means one thing...they can charge you more money for time you don't need them there. I offer a variety of packages (all include your digital files), with various prices between $625 and $1,400. Feel free to check out my website, even if you just want to use it as a reference or to ask a general photography question: www.mandymcdphotos.com. Good luck! :-)

Oops sorry, just thought I'd offer some advice as a photographer myself. Thought I might be able to provide some insight and that it might be helpful to hear from someone who's in the business...sorry if I offended someone!

I'm also posting under my vendor name in my response so you don't think I was trying to "trick" anyone in my last post-at the time I posted we were under my best friend's Knot.com account as we were searching the site for photographers for her July wedding.

Good luck to each and every one of you!
  • I felt the same way! We are using Studio 3 Photography. We took our engagement pictures at night on fountain square aroud Christmas and they are beautiful. We have our photography, photobooth and videography with them for $ 2400. Their videographer Sean is so great, and I laughed through most of our session with Tanika and Tara. Our second choices were Molly Grosse and Studio 66. It came down to us really wanting two photographers and wanting to budget in videography and the photobooth.
