Rehearsal Dinner Compromise

Ugh so after two weeks of calling a million places and getting prices we've finally decided to have our rehearsal dinner catered at our home. I really didn't want to do this because it means work, stress and a mess to clean up in my home in time for pictures the next morning but no matter where we went we were looking at another $1,000 because of the size of the group (we have a larger immediate family thanks to divorced parents on both sides.)  We're at about 25 people between immediate family, the wedding party and the wedding party's significant others (most are coming from out of town so we have to include their dates.)

This is definitely the cheaper option by far, even if I hire one or two of my younger brother's friends to act as servers to alleviate some of the stress but I'm still a bit disappointed because I really didn't want this on my plate.

We did the engagement part at our house because my parents are divorced and are impossible to work together to do anything jointly and even though they were "hosting it" it ended up being so much freaking work for me. My mom and FI have promised that I won't have to do any of the clean up or anything this time around but just having 25 people in my house in itself if stressful.

Anyway any advice of staying calm and maybe delegating specific tasks so I can keep my role in this as low as possible?  Anyone else doing it at home?

  • Can you get a Groupon/Wagjag, etc for a cleaning service? I see them all the time where you can get 2 hours of cleaning for a discounted rate.

  • We're getting Chinese food from our favorite restaurant and eating at a friend's house (the home of our officiant and singer). We are at about 15 people but opted to only have those in the wedding and their significant others/spouses for dinner. We didn't include our families unless they are part of the ceremony. We want to keep some of the elements of the ceremony a surprise for all of our guests, parents included. This may be non traditional but it will work for us. Our parents aren't paying for any of the wedding and all of them are okay with having a night to rest before the big day.

  • What about platters from Sams or Costco or local grocery? As far as cleaning, I agree see if you can get somebody to do it, or do what I do, clean a room and close it off, clean a room and close it off! hehehe :)
  • 95% of the people coming to our wedding are from out of town, and we've decided to hold a Texas BBQ at our home for Rehearsal dinner, especially since the guests staying with us are from overseas.  I plan on having a local grill guy come and do the BBQ on his grill and we can make the sides for it.  We're going to have about 30-35 people - kinda like a pre-wedding party.  Like you, I think it will be much cheaper.  We have a pool so the kids can swim and I'm looking at it as a nice relaxing time with close friends and family, some of whom I haven't seen in quite a few years.  Frankly, with the number of women that are going to be there, I don't expect to have to do a whole helluva lot.  At the risk of sounding like a Princess, this is my week and I'll direct.  LOLOL
