Invitation Vent/Question

Ok.... here is the background....

My cousin makes incredible invitations as a side hobby. I asked her back in July to make our invitations, RD invites and ceremony programs. She agreed. She lives a couple hours from me and nothing has worked out to get together. I emailed her right after Christmas with some ideas.... she never replied. I know she is SUPER busy, so I decided I would just move on. I didnt want her to feel obligated.

So I found an etsy dealer and decide on a design. Then I found out that the marketing department can make the same invitations for much cheaper. So I met with them and the girl in the print shop. Met with her on Jan. 19th. She said she would have the estimate to me by Monday, Jan. 23rd. Tuesday, Jan 24th I hadnt heard anything... so I emailed her, She said she had been busy and would get it to me by the end of the week. Well I didnt get it last week and havent gotten anything this week.

Then yesterday, my cousin posts on my FB wall "Hey Chels- sorry I am so slow, but I just put the mock up of your wedding invitation in the mail, let me know what you think." CRAP!!!! Now what?

I am SO torn! I have always wanted my cousin to do this, but she would only be doing the designing of the invite and now that I have already foudn a design that I LOVE... I just dont know what to do. I mean I emailed my cousin over a month ago and never heard back!

What would you do? Go with my cousin.... wait on the marketing department.... order from etsy?

UGh......

I would order from etsy because you know you'll get it. I'm sure your cousin will understand
  • Man, we're just all full of issues today. :(

Your cousin really should have informed you that she would be working on a mock-up. I wouldn't do anything until you see her invitation mock-up. Maybe you'll like that one more, even though you love the other one. I wouldn't feel obligated to use her just because she's your cousin if you happen to like the marketing one better. You'd just have to break it to her as gently as possible that you had looked into other places and are choosing to take some stress off of her by going with them.
  • Exaclty what Midge said.  I'm sorry you've ended up in this position over something that would seem so simple. :(
  • What are the price differences between the three?

Well... the marketing department hasnt gotten the estimate to me yet. So I really dont know! My cousin would be doing the design for free... then I would have the marketing departmen print them for me. I am just feeling like the girl working in the print shop isnt that reliable and I dont want to be stressing!

  • I don't see a problem with going with your cousin then! It would make things easier and less stressful having to have an awkward conversation with your family member!
  • I wouldn't wait till it comes in the mail I would tell her now that you are excited to see what she has done for you but since you tried to get a hold of her and nevr heard back, you were concerened that she was over loading her plate with doing your invites.

I am sure she will understand since she is the one who actually didn't get back to you!  Also, I would try and think up another way she can participate in making something!

Can she make the programs or menu's for the reception?  Maybe she can do signs for the back f the chairs that say bride and groom, how about the escort cards and table numbers?

There are tons of other things that she can help with that need to be printed and designed!  I am sure she will understand about the invites!!

Yeah- I am just torn. If I go with my cousin, I have to go through the print shop at work, which is what is causing the biggest headache right now. I think I will see what my cousin sent me and give the print shop anotehr week to get back to me and then cut ties and go with the Etsy dealer!

If I go with the print shop at work, they are doing the invitations, RD invites and ceremony programs. There isnt much else my cousin could design for the wedding. We arent having menus at the reception (hors d'ouevres reception), we are having paper mache letters made for the backs of our chairs (already ordered), we arent having escort cards or table numbers. Those are all great suggestions though!!!

  • Are there any other local printers in your area that you could use?  They might be cheaper and more reliable.

If I was in this situation I would probably use my cousin's template, if I liked the mock up.  I would have a hard time telling a familly member no.  But that's just me :)

There are tons of places I could get them printed. But the savings is supposed to be tremendous if we use the print shop at work. I would love to use it, but just feel like it is going to be April and am still going to be waiting on the the unreliable girl in the print shop!
