Ideas for Place Cards

Hello Ladies!
I want a really different idea for place cards. I don't really want to do the traditional cards that people are just going to throw away. I thought of engraved river rocks (since I am getting married at the Riverdale Manor). Any thoughts on how to go about doing that? I'd love to do it myself but it seems a little pricey.
Any other creative ideas for placecards?

what about painting the names on the rocks instead of engraving... they make fine tip paint pens in a bunch of different colors... that may work?

One of my cousins bought a bunch of the little picture frames that hold a wallet size picture in it, but instead of a picture they put the place card in it.

We just saw the coolest eco idea.. it was name cards that were wired onto a piece of a branch that the paper was plantable.  Wildflowers I believe.. I think I have pics if you want to see Pm me.

    That sounds interesting Shutterbug.
Painting on rocks I am afraid it will look cheezy and rub off. :\

Depending on the time of year, I've seen mini pumpkins, small granny-smith apples, small pears, etc. with a paper leaf on the stem where the name and table is written. Definitely more affordable than engraved river rocks but still rustic and unique.

Since we're getting married in December, we're going for a vintage Christmas theme so I'm making placecards that look like vintage gift tags and hanging them from a little Christmas tree. People will have to find their tags on the tree!
