Travel Insurance

What is everyones thoughts on Travel Insurance? We had all our details worked out for our honeymoon we are going to Hawaii in May for 10 days. I  just want other peoples suggestions on the travel insurance we can purchase. Its about $208 for both of us but I just dont know if its really worth it. I heard that we should call our insurance first and see if they will cover us or if you book it on a credit card that has travel insurnace on it it might be covered? Just looking for peoples input on it! THank you a bunch! Smile So Excited to get it booked!

Re: Travel Insurance

  • That is exciting! I think the HM is what my FI was most excited about doing.

I personally have never paid for the extra travel insurance. The insurance offered through the airline doesnt normally cover much more than natural disasters, but depending on who you are getting it from it may be worth it. So just read the fine print and see.

I would also call your credit card company, certain cards, particularily AMEX sometimes have a lot of coverage for flights and rental cars.
  • I think FI and I might just buy it, because it covers things like sickness, cancellations (what if you have to delay your honeymoon for some reason and need a refund or to reschedule?), lost luggage, etc.  It's only a couple hundred dollars out of a several thousand dollar honeymoon.  We've never gotten insurance before because we've never been on such an expensive trip.  But we feel in this case, a couple extra hundred is not a huge deal.  It's worth the peace of mind.

  • We always purchase travel insurance on large trips. If something happens and you have to postpone you would be out all of that money. Spending a little over $100 each to me would be worth the piece of mind. I would look into other companies as well though and not the one through your travel agent and company. Someone on here has a great link that we used but I forgot the website name.

Also, trip insurance if you get a good company it covers things like a death in the family, illness, weather (sometimes!) and other items.

  • for large trips we do purchase but oyu should also know what your airline/hotel's cancellation or reschduling policies are.
and i dont know if it's worth it without knowing what the coverages, exclusions, terms limits and conditions are.
if you want to compare ive used insuremytrip.com for years to purchase policies. it might be a good idea for you to compare to the one you note above.

  • My 2 cents....

I had never purchased travel insurance prior to our honeymoon. We had planned to spend about 5k on our HM trip, which is way more than we typically spend on a vacation. We thought it was worth an extra $200 bucks to protect that kind of investment. You never know what could come up prior to a trip, so having that peace of mind was worth it in our eyes. Thankfully we didnt need to use it, but like any other insurance, its nice to know it was available to us just in case.

    Good luck :)

  • Hi - We did buy trip insurance for our trip scheduled for Nov. We have purchased it for a prior trip that we spent a lot of money on, and felt that it gave us extra assurance that we wouldn't lose our money if for some reason we couldn't go. I think it is well worth the money. We got ours through a site that our travel agent recommended:
