Has anyone done DIY Michaels invitations?

Hi all, have any of you done the DIY invitation kits from Michaels? Did you use your own printer, or did you take it somewhere like Kinkos? If you had someone else do the printing, how much did it cost? Did you do laser printing? Did they provide a proof? And how did it actually work - I assume you need to bring in the file/s and the actual kit / paper etc.... looking for any experiences or advice. Thanks!

I did! I had a great experience with them. The problems that I had were mostly user error-- me trying to be extra fast with printing and not paying attention. The kits come with everything you need unless you want extra inserts (I made some). I printed them on a regular at home printer, nothing special. They came out just fine. I see no need to go to a copy store to do them. As long as your printer works ok, you're good to go.

The kit comes with directions to a website and how to upload templates that will work for your style. I uploaded them into a word doc and then changed the font and design how I wanted. It was pretty easy.

Yes, they do come with an extra one to practice with. This was really helpful because I had to know how to orient them when printing and I needed to adjust the font color a little to make it match the design.

The only thing that I didn't really like was the size of the lables because I decided to hand-write vs print them. The little sticker seals are also not too sticky, so I glued the envelopes shut. I wouldn't let these deter you from getting them, though. It is really a fantastic deal for what you get. I think that my invitations came out to be $0.80/ea, which is really hard to beat and they looked really pretty.

I didn't have good luck with them, my printer ended up bending them and you couldn't get them flat again. I have heard of people having good luck with the programs though. They can be hit or miss, thankfully Michaels will always let you return them.

I have invitations that I am planning to use, but I haven't made them yet.  I was planning on taking them to Impress at Office Max (their printing center) and they charge .10 per page I think?  I still need to check kinkos as well.  They did request that if I brought in my own format that they wanted it to be a pdf.  I'm looking elsewhere to print because I only have a color printer and I think laser printing looks nicer.

I used them, and LOVED them. I debated taking them to a printing place, because my original printer didn't do too well with them (it was a Dell color printer) but at the recommendation of a friend, I actually bought an Epson printer that was on sale at Target for like $25.00 and it ended up doing an amazing job. Unlike my Dell, it didn't bend the card stock at all, and it printed really nice and smoothly. I got a ton of comments that people thought I'd spent a LOT of money on my invitations, but between 40% off coupons at Michael's, and my cheap printer... I hardly spent anything :-)

I didn't do Michael's DIYs but I used the Target ones for our rehearsal dinner with good results.  I have a HP all in one printer and it did a great job on them without bending them.  That being said, I am not a fan of my HP printer because we've had nothing but problems with it (and we're on our 2nd replacement from the factory!) so I wouldn't steer  you that direction at all!  It prints nicely when it works which is about the only nice thing I can say about it.  :)

My old roommate used them and they turned out lovely.  She took the pieces in to the University of St. Thomas printing shop and they did them all for a super reasonable price.  I don't think you need to be a student to go there (I was definitely considering it), but it has pretty limited daytime hours.
