I bought his ring!

We went to the store last night to do wedding bands, and I thought we were going to just start kinda looking at a ring for him but I ended up buying one!

I'm freaking excited.

It was funny because he was so overwhelmed trying on all the different rings, and deciding what metal he wanted, what style.  But when he found the one he wanted it was adorable - he was just like "This is the one!"  He can be such a girl sometimes.

My ring is yellow gold and we got him a yellow gold band so it would match, but he tried on a lot of tungsten rings.  My brother-in-law's ring is tungsten.  They're hella cheaper but I'm glad he went with the gold.

Thoughts on tungsten?  Our ring lady told us that the tungsten rings are really trendy right now but wasn't sure if people would still be buying them in ten years.

Re: I bought his ring!

  • My hubby got a tungsten carbide ring.  He liked it because of the coloring...it's darker grey in color than white gold.  I think he also liked the fact that it's "super strong" and has to be crushed off of your finger instead of cut off.  Men.  Go figure.
  • Sqee!  I'm excited for you!!  We bought our rings a couple months ago...and then the mall completely flooded and was destroyed and is still not open!!  So our rings were definitely meant to be!!

We looked at tungsten rings, too and they look nice, but they're completely unsizable so if he gains/loses weight he has to buy a new ring, that was my FI's reasoning against them....and they didn't have diamonds in them which was something he really wanted :)

Congrats on your purchase, having the rings makes it all the more real, doesn't it?!?

  • I don't think it matters if people will be buying them in 10 years. If its a classic design, then it won't go out of style. Wedding rings shouldn't be fads, and you don't get a new one just because fads change. So I don't think it matters if you really like it today, and aren't buying it jsut because its the new thing.

Its really exciting that he found it though!! FI doesn't want to go shop for his, but he has thin fingers, so all the ones online are too thick. I'd like to be able to see how it looks on him first, but he never wants me to spend my momey on him. Its kind of aggravating.

  • YAY!!!!!!!!! We got our rings about 2 months ago! FI was squirming, nervous, sweating Im like listen if you ever wanna buy another hot wheels car pick one and lets go go!
  • The fact that the tungsten rings couldn't be sized was probably what turned him away from them, initially.  I think he likes the idea of having the same ring forever.  He did like the coloring, though - he has a necklace and a watch that I bought for him that are similar to the color of tungsten.  But I mean, I doubt he'd be wearing those forever.

My brother-in-law is a farmer, though, and he liked that if he was wearing his ring and something happened it would just shatter instead of bend and squish his finger.  Although, he never wears it while working - haha, but still.

It does make it more real :) Every little thing we decide on is exciting but the ring was so much fun.  His fingers are HILARIOUS though.  He's a really thin guy but his hands are really big, and he has like, no knuckles.  Most of the rings just looked bizarre on his finger!  So I was excited he found one that he really, really loved.

Also, because we got his ring at the same store we got mine, they're giving us complimentary champagne flutes with free engraving!  We were like... whaaaaaat!  So fun!

This for my fiance too. We love the dark look and they are very modern and stylish. But yea they can not be sized. So we bought the Protection Plan for 49.99 and if he ever changes sizes we can take it to the store and they order a new one for no charge(takes like 6 weeks to get back).
He loves it! When any of our friends come over he goes upstairs and gets it to show them. So Funny!!

  • Stainless steel can give the same look as tungsten.  We were turned off by the tungsten because my H is in the Army and  if something happens to your hand or finger the finger will come off before the ring will.  We got him a stainless steel band as a stand in band because we are having the big wedding next summer and we are getting the nicer bands for the religious ceremony but he loves it so much he doesn't want to get another one.
  • My Fi will have a tungsten ring, although I like the look of white gold much better. He works with electricity on a regular basis, and wants to be able to wear his ring to work. That's why we are buying tungsten for him.

  • My husband could not get a tungsten ring because it is slightly radioactive, and he is a physicist working with extremely sensitive equipment. He told the lady this and she was like, "Um WHAT?" But they cannot even eat bananas, because one isotope of potassium is slightly radioactive, and it would skew the results.

My hubby got a platinum ring, because that is what I have, and he cannot see me get anything nice or expensive and not want the same thing! So his wedding ring cost more than mine.
  • Congrats! Tungsten is for FI as well. He was so cute trying on rings, nervous, gittery. He had wanted white gold, but he noticed the tungsten rings in the case and loved the look and feel of them. He's also an avid climber, runner, and mountain biker and he loved the fact the metal wouldn't scratch or wear. I can just imagine him jamming his hand into a rock hold, scratching that white gold or platinum band to tatters...oh and he would...The only way he can ding up that ring is if he drags a diamond across it.  HAH! Take that mother nature!

  • So happy for you.  We need to get FI his ring too but he is so darn picky and has really thin fingers.

We are probably going to go with a ceramic ring.  He tried it on and really liked it.  I found one at a jeweler for $200 and the same one on-line for $100.  The one at the jeweler comes with the protection plan and the ring can be replaced at anytime so I may just go with that one.

And with those price tags - how can you pass that up!

  • I know.  I wanted to get him a ring that cost a little more.  I feel bad that he spent more on mine and I'm only going to spend $200 on his.  But I'm making up for it by getting him that darn PS3 that he wants.

We had the same problem with DH.  His fingers are HUGE.  He wears a size 13 ring, and not a single store anywhere had a ring that big.  The only thing he could try on was the ring sizers, lmao.
  • my husband got a tungsten carbide because he is in the Army and when he depoyed to Iraq for OIF 1 while married to his ex-wife, he wound up losing a diamond out of his band and the ring got all bent out of shape. So he wound up replacing it during R&R with the carbide ring and it lasted the rest of the deployment and the 3 years left of their marriage. I actually still have that ring somewhere around here (saving it for his daughter). So he got the same material for his ring with me and it has survived this deployment well, and he's been gone 8 months so far and even got his hand smashed in a door before he left and the ring didn't bend (probably saved his hand from being hurt more than it was!)
