Moroccan Lanterns for Centerpiece PIP

FI and I have decided to do non-floral centerpieces to save some money, and I really like the idea of using Moroccan lanterns. I like anything with candles to be honest, but my venue doesn't allow open flame so they seemed to be the perfect fit. I've looked on-line and it seems like most of them are 10-11" high, so FI thinks that they would look too small on our tables. We are having round tables for 8 people each. Should I just order one and see what it would look like before making a final decision? They are about $10 per lantern, so it won't be breaking the bank or anything if I just get one. But I also wanted to see what you girls think before doing even that. I'll try to PIP but I've never done it before so not sure how it will turn out.

  • Those are SOOO pretty!!! I would order one first just so you can get a visual first, then if you decide you like it, order the rest. If they turn out too small maybe pair them with another small item as the centerpiece? Maybe like a little vase with a few small flowers in it? Just throwing out some ideas. Those lanterns are gorgeous, indeed!

  • Just be careful because they might get really hot with a real flame.  I have similar ones I use for deco at Christmas and they get really hot when lit for a while so I would just test that out first.  Could you use battery candles or would that not give enough light?

As far as height could you maybe put them on a pedestal, kind of along the lines of a cake stand, and then maybe put faux petals around them mixed with jewels or glass stones.  And maybe alternate the tables that have the lifts.

I love the color of them.  Today I was looking at silk orchids at michaels and thinking about testing them in just a tall cylinder vase to see if they looked too fake.  But the best looking ones were the ones that were that fuschia color and I am leaning towards blue and green.

Please keep us posted what you do.  I love seeing other peoples ideas.

  • Thank you for ideas, ladies! I am so not crafty or creative, so it's good to hear different suggestions! Good point about them getting hot, I might try it with the battery candles to see if it would work. Our reception venue is a ballroom, so I am not too worried about them not being bright enough. I liked the color of this lanterns, too! We have purple and green as our wedding colors, so they should fit in!

  • Beautiful lanterns!

I'm using lanterns for my centerpieces, but I'm pairing them with a couple various bottles I've been collecting with just a few stems of flowers.

This is a rough kind of mock-up:

Some of the bottles were free, others were a couple dollars, and the lanterns were on clearance for like $4 a piece at Zgallerie.  I'm ordering bulk flowers from fiftyflowers.com for the stems, so all in all it's not going to be a whole lot of money, and I like the look.

I think if you group your lanterns with a couple other items (usually use the rule of 3), they'll look really great!  I don't think centerpieces need to be really big, since you'll also have plates, glasses, napkins, and probably table numbers.

  • That is a beautiful lantern, anastassiiat! Where do you plan to order them from? (Sorry if you posted that already and I missed it.)
