invites, RSVPs, and SATDs

After looking at different invite sites and private stationers, I have discovered that the vast majority are outside of our budget. We want to get away with spending about $100 maximum. My brother is going to school for graphic design, so I'm going to have him design something and then look into printing options from Kinkos or something like that. Anyone have similar experiences?

Second, to save money, would it be bad to include an email address or website to direct guests to so they can RSVP instead of having them mail back a postcard?Thinking about saving money on postage and the second printing. Everyone we are inviting has internet access, so we're not concerned about someone not being able to do this. I hate to be cheap, but if we can save some money that  would definitely be preferable.

Also, any good, cheap SATD ideas?

Re: invites, RSVPs, and SATDs

  • Are you trying to get invites, rsvps and stds for $100?
I'm not too much of help but I made my own invitations (pocket w/inserts) (165 invitations) and programs (175) for about $600 through paper depot in minneapolis.
I guess it depends on how "fancy" you want your inviation to be and how many you are sending out.
A way to cut corners is to eliminate STD's all together. I didn't send them, and I know many who haven't!

  • What you're thinking of doing with the invitations is exactly what we did. H made a design that was full color on both sides of the regular sized paper 8.5x11? we got them printed with RSVP postcards for about 50. That was for about 60 or so invitations with a bit of a discount I got through work. If you're going to do online or email RSVPs, I would also give the option of RSVPing by phone.

  • We also just went to Paper Depot last weekend to purchase the supplies for invitations -  I bought the supplies and paper to make about 135 invites and it cost us right around $200 for everything.  But we are doing the pocket folder kind with the rsvp postcard, so if you did something simpler I bet it would cost less.

My sister is in graphic design and will design the invite and then we are going to PostNet in St. Paul since they did my STD's for about $80 printing and I was impressed with their pricing/printing capabilities.

If you are looking for budget ideas, I definitely would check out Paper Depot and let them know what you are looking to spend and they will have a good idea which type of invite design may be right for you.  I was so happy to have their expertise when picking out mine!

    Good luck.

  • There is always the option of uploading it to VistaPrint and doing them through them - then you'll have nicely printed and for a pretty cheap price. I don't think it is a good idea to do the website/email RSVP, it's a personal opinion that I know is shared with a bunch of people. You could if you printed your invites through vistaprint also print off postcards (I've used them numerous times for various projects I've worked on) and then just do the postcard stamp versus the full priced stamp!
  • Even as a tech savvy youngish person, I prefer to either call in an RSVP or mail a card back.  One of DH's relatives got married last summer and did online only RSVPs and it was annoying.  You couldn't RSVP as a couple, we had to RSVP per person. We don't have kids but if we did and I had to RSVP many times over, I'd be kinda peeved.  If you go the online only route, make sure that you're really making it easy on your guests and not just you.
  • How many guests will you have? great!  Check Groupn/Living Social or the Invites and Paper board where brides often post deals for their area that you can purchase.  I had a spend $50 get $130, which was an amazing deal!

For invites we purchased Brides invitation kits from Michaels.  They had a 40% off sale, so we got invites for 220 people for about $140.  They have a great selection of colors and styles, and the invitations are really easy to print.

My cousin gave the option of emailing or calling in their RSVP, which I thought was totally fine.  I agree with PPs and that you shouldn't have a RSVP website where everyone can see responses, and that you should have a phone number listed as well.
  • Wow, I just looked at my post and the first sentence makes no sense, whoops!  Nice job, Knot!  I wrote that we made STD postcards on Vistaprint and they turned out great. :)
