getting married in Europe

Hi, I'm new to the board.  I'm getting married in Spain in 2013.  Just wondering if there is anyone else out there in the same boat, doing an international wedding.

Re: getting married in Europe

  • Hi Heather! I am not a whole lot of help since I am getting married in FL but I just wanted to welcome you to the board.  I think that there is someone getting married in Europe that is on here though.  You should tell us more about your plans.  :)

  • Hey,

H and I got married in Ireland two months ago.  We hired a wedding planner who got us a great deal on our venue (Ashford Castle).  For us it was A LOT less stressful then planning a local/Canadian wedding. In the end our wedding day was exactly what we wanted.

  • Thanks :)  FL was probably my second choice.  My mom lives there.  But since his fam is from Europe and mine is from America we decided we couldn't make everyone happy anyway so we are doing a destination wedding.  I'm getting married in Ibiza (Belearic Islands) Spain.

Elle, that's awesome that you got married in a Castle.  How romantic and beautiful that must have been!  Did the weather hold out?  Part of my reason for picking Spain is because it's so sunny all the time.  My caterer is doing most of the planning.  We also have someone that takes care of planning the ceremony liaising with the Spanish priests and helping get all the paperwork done.  I think the caterer knows tones of venders on the island so she will make lots of suggestions and i need to chose.  She already helped me pick the reception venue :)  I'm super excited but the wedding is not til June 2013.  Regardless, I'm flying back to the states next month to do some gown shopping with my mom and my girls :)

  • The weather wasn't perfect but it wasn't that bad. It really helped that our wedding planner specialized in Irish weddings so she took care of everything and was so helpful. The paperwork was the biggest pain by far but we expected that.  We also got married to avoid family crap.  It would have been nice to have his family and a couple friends there with us but my family is beyond ridiculous so we decided it would be best to go by ourselves (and we don't regret it one bit).

  • Congrats! I'm not getting married in Europe, but I'm getting married in Australia. Planning an international wedding that is quite far from where I live is a little tricky, but thankfully the resort we chose has been great. Not to mention that it's a national park and only has 6 rooms, so the wedding can't be all that fancy anyway!!! The toughest part so far was completing all of the paperwork to make it legal. Just pulling it all together and making sure it got there took a lot of time, but once it arrived in Oz, it was a huge relief. I think the next stressful thing will actually be getting there in one piece! We're only allowed one small bag each on the island, so it should be interesting!

  • Hey Hcampana! I'm getting married in Mallorca this August - so just around the corner from Ibiza! :) My FI is from Mallorca, so that's our "in" for registering for marriage over there. Are either of you legal residents? How was it getting permission to get married there? What's your venue like? Have you been to Spain before?

We were over there for a month over Christmas, and planning was super easy...or for now, anyway! After "booking" the venue (no contract, no deposit, no nothing - his town is so small that everything is done by giving your word...super scary for me!!) and finding a photographer, no other decisions have to be made until July. Everyone thought I was crazy for wanting to pick out flowers and menus 8 months ahead of time!!!

Keep me posted on how things are going!
  • I'm so excited to have some fellow international brides! :)

Jells - your wedidng in autralia sounds like an incredible feat.  Wow.. I feel like I have it easy now.  How are you going to get your dress to the island?  Are you going to do a non-traditianal dress?

cpblanco - I can't believe you are getting in Mallorca!  It's so close! I've never been but I can imagine its similar to Ibiza.  I've been to ibiza several times and really love it.  I brought the FI in october last year he fell in love with it too.  We are not residents, but there seems to be a big market for destination wedings there.  I'm actually doing well with the paperwork.  I did alot of research online, and since tons of Brits get married there, they're a little used to non-Spanish weddings.  I found a wonderful women who provides the service of helping you out with all the paperwork to make it legal, and with liaising with the priest and getting the date on his calendar and getting it approved with the bishop etc etc.  Its really making our lives MUCH easier.
I totally hear you about the planning.  I have not signed any kind of contract or given any deposit yet with the caterer or the venue.  That's actually one of the reasons I love Ibiza... It's so laid back!  My caterer, who is also my planner basically told me the same thing about planning... get a photographer now, and everything else can wait til after October!  hehe.

We deceided to do the ceremony in a church and the reception in a villa, how 'bout you?
