Our first Sunday back in Church

My FI and I were both raised Catholic, and though I've been better about attending in the last few years compared to him, I feel like he is more in tune with his faith than I am.  Since we need to do our pre-cana, and want to have a Catholic wedding and raise our future family Catholic, we decided we were going to start going back to church.

So yesterday, after some back and forth, we both got dressed and he picked me up for church at a new parish we had never been to before.  I'm trying really hard to be less hard-hearted and I think it was a really good first step.  We both agreed after Mass that we really liked the priest, and were glad that we went.

I guess I just wanted to share that we finally did it, and went back to church.  I know that we should have always kept going, but you have to start somewhere.  I'm actually looking forward to starting our marriage preparation and getting to know each other better, while also going back to our roots and hopefully starting a new family tradition.

  • glad you went! since it sounds like you haven't been in awhile, make sure to also go to confession asap! It's WONDERFUL! It'll be hard to drag yourself there, but just tell the priest you haven't been in awhile, and he should walk you right through it, and afterwards you will feel so awesome and CLEAN!

  • Wonderful! I agree, you have to start somewhere! I agree with LaLaith, and would really encourage you to return to confession as well.

Please continue to learn your faith -- whether it is learning anew or really, truly learning it for the first time -- and open your heart and mind. You might be shocked at what the Holy Spirit may do in your life.

Please also stick around to chat, ask questions, etc. :)

  • That's great!  I'm glad you had a positive experience.  I agree with PP that confession would be a great next step.  Stick around here :)

  • Ditto all of the above!! Glad you hopped back on the train :-)
  • I agree with everyone else.  I'm so glad that you guys went back!  And confession is important so that you can receive Communion, but the feeling that you get when you walk out knowing that if you're hit by a bus, you'll go straight to Heaven?  That's pretty awesome.

  • I appreciate all the support, ladies.

And Agape, for some reason I laughed at your post.  Maybe the way it was phrased?

I didn't take communion because I don't want to until I've been back for a while and yes, gone to confession.  I've gone once or twice a month the last few years with my family, but it was very forced.  It's much different to go of your own volition as an adult...and I've been an adult for five years!

I wasn't aware that agape gave out the judgements
  • We've gone so long without dragging pettiness into threads here, let's keep that trend going.  This thread is about OP going back to church for the first time.   Yaaaaaaay church!

  • There were no judgements. Just simple church teaching, as always.
  • purgatory is one of those things that has completely dropped of the radar in basic catechism classes.  many "catholics" dont even believe it exists, but then many seem not not think hell exists either.

OP, I do think it was the way agape worded her reply.   Similar to the concept of "limbo", the concept of preguratory left the Catholic Church,, for the most part, about 20 years ago.

The babies that used to wander forever in some vague place, neither heaven nor hell, are
safely home with their father, our Heavenly Father who cares for the as he does all other souls,.

I may have the wrong book, but "Seasons in Purgator' was a book written by Dominick Dunne about 15 years ago.  The word implies, basicly, being stuck in a state between two words.  I assure you that this is not your problem.

    And welcome back., btw!

    <div>THis is absolutely 100% incorrect.</div><div>
</div><div>Limbo was never a doctrine of the church.</div><div>
</div><div>Purgatory was and still is and always will be a doctrine of the church. This is basics of catholic teaching. Thank GOD for purgatory. This has nothing to do with unbaptized babies. This is why there is a funeral mass-- to pray for the repose of the soul. This is why priests have intentions at mass for those who have died. --- there are mass cards you can get from your parish.</div><div>
    </div><div>CCC 1030-1033</div><div>
    </div>
  • Purgatory is still very much a part of reality.  Prayers for those in purgatory are a regular part of our masses.
