My mother did this for my sister's wedding but that's only because they were married in Mass. I don't think it is considered legal in RI. Sorry

The laws are a little tougher in RI than other places.  See below...

Officiants: Everyone who has been, or is, the minister of any society professing to meet for religious purposes, or incorporated for the promotion of such purposes, and holding stated and regular services, and who has been ordained according to the customs and usages of such society may perform marriages. Ministers must obtain a license from the city or town clerk before performing marriages. Ministers must endorse and return the marriage license to the town or city clerk in which the marriage was performed.

You can become a minister for a day if a state law is passed specifically citing the name of the person performing the ceremony, the names of the couple getting married, the town the ceremony is in, and the date of the ceremony.

I was told by the Newport City Clerk that the online certificates are accepted in the City of Newport.  Not sure of anywhere else...

Have your dad get ordained on this website, when you file your marriage license the day after the wedding, you bring your dad, his ordainment certificate, and you and DH to the city clerk.  He has to fill in "Religious" under ceremony type and you are golden!  It's really really easy to go this route in RI, I've checked a minimum of 4 times with the state department of vital satistics.
