Last Names?

Since I am 3 months from W-Day, I have been practicing writing my new last name. (I suck at it). It got me to thinking what are yal'll doing pertaining to your last name. Are you keeping your maiden name, hyphenating, or rocking his? I am so rocking his last name there was never any question of it. I am just glad my future children will be at the top of the alphabet instead of one of the last people called like me.

Re: Last Names?

  • Huh looks like I'm in the minority :) I'm keeping my last name. I just really have always wanted to and FI is ok with it. I'm not going to be super strict about it, though. If people call me Mrs. Fiance, I'm cool with that. I just want to keep my name professionally and...well...so I know it's still mine. If we have kids, they'll have his name, though I would love to maybe have them have my name as a middle name.
  • I'm basically with vonclancy here. I have a professional identity and am keeping my name for that purpose but am legally changing it per FI's wishes. Not really a big deal to me and I agreed that our kids would have his name, but I definitely was not dreaming of taking anyone else's name!

  • I will be taking his last name, but I really don't want to lol. I am vk, I have always been vk, and people started calling me by my future initials and it seriously bothered me! I will be procrastinating my way to secretary of state after the wedding lol.

  • I have a very unique last name, which is two words, hard to spell and pronounce, and comes at the end of the alphabet. His is shorter, one word, equally hard to spell and pronounce, and comes at the beginning of the alphabet. Honestly, it was the lesser of two evils.

I'll still keep my own last name for use in certain situations, like bike racing--if I ever do that again. Announcers love saying my name. :)
  • My last name is awesome. No joke- growing up it's always been the coolest name and people know me by it. So I don't want to get rid of it!! Especially since his is so not great lol. I'm sad. I'll legally change my name to First Middle Last NewLast - so two middles. But I'll go by both names at different occasions I think- like keep my name for work, but his last name for social. Our kids will go by his last name for sure though.

[QUOTE]I am changing my name too, I can't say I am thrilled about it but I will adjust.  I know FI would be slightly hurt if i didn't.  I am just not thrilled about retraining my signature and getting used to a new last name lol.

<div>I fixed this by only signing my first name. Long ago I decided my name was too damn long to sign the whole thing! So my signature won't change. :)</div>
  • I'm taking FI's name, but I'm also an author, so I'm going to keep my maiden name for that, just as a Pen Name. Luckily being a writer is one field where your professional identity doesn't have to be your legal identity :)

  • I'm talking FI's last name.  My name is ridiculously hard to spell over the phone, a pain in the butt to write, and just sounds like something you chew on.  His is much simpler :-)  I have a professional identity under my current name but the company will let you update your website, etc.
  • I'm indifferent. I have no attachment to my current name but I have an aversion to dealing with government offices. FI would like me to but doesn't feel strongly about it. So I might change it or I might be too lazy.

I feel exactly the same way because I also have a uniquely awesome last name! This thread has made me feel so much better about my hesitation to change my name. At this point, I'll probably move my maiden name to my middle name so I can keep it, but I'm having a really hard time with it. It's completely up to me, but I do think the idea of us having the same last name is cool. I just wish his last name was as great as mine :)

  • I don't think I'm changing my name..... It would seem to strange after my whole life..... I offered him my last name..... Didn't bite ;)
  • I offered my last name as well and FI wasn't feeling it either. I love my last name. I have identified myself forever with my maiden name. I get my attitude, my looks, and my personality from that side of my family. I think I am going to feel like I lost a piece of myself but at the same time I am gaining a new piece of me.

  • I am old fashioned. Im taking my fiance's last name...Im named after an actress...full and last...so it would be nice to have my own unique name too. C:

  • I will be taking his last name. I think for my legal name I'll keep it First Middle Last NewLast. For my signature I'll do First MiddleInitial NewLast -- I have always signed with my middle initial, so I just have to retrain myself on the last name :)

  • I'm modern and wild, I guess. He's changing his name to mine. This came about in a few ways.

    1) My name is AWESOME. His name is top 5 most common surnames. Blah. There are plenty of them in the world.

    2) I have a well developed professional identity with publications in my name.

    3) I didn't want to change mine. He didn't care.
