TMI question--honeymoon and birth control

I'm on track to get my period the week of my honeymoon, blech. I'm on the pill (been on it for years now), and my sister tells me I should just skip the "reminder" pills in the last week of the pack so I don't get my period that month. I've certainly heard of girls doing this but I've never done it before myself...this may sound stupid, but is it safe to do? Anyone done it before to avoid getting their period for some reason? Thanks ladies!

  • Talk to your doctor.

  • I've done it before. You may get a little spotting and the next one is very heavy, at least thats what happened to me.  Ask your doc.
  • I am the same as you - supposed to get my period the week of my honeymoon.  I talked to my doctor and she said it is safe to skip the reminder pills and start a new pack.

  • I've done this for bar exams and my honeymoon BUT - AND I CAN"T STRESS THIS ENOUGH - I did it because my OB/GYN who knows my medical history told me that it was okay.  Nobody on the internet is qualified to tell you if it is okay for you to do.  Call your doctor.

  • Agree with everyone else - talk to you doctor.  Different people will have different reactions to this.  When I tried this in the past, it didn't work at all for me.  (I'm now on Seasonique and only get my period once every 3 months, but when I switched to Seasonique it took six months for my body to fully adjust).

  • Speak with your doctor. If he/she says it is OK, be aware that you might still get spotting the week you're skipping your period, and I have heard from friends it can be almost as heavy as a lighter day of your period. So you may not totally get out of having to deal with it.

  • Not all birth control pills are designed to have the sugar pills skipped.  Call your doctor.
  • Yeah, talk to your OB. Typically you can alter the pills you take to make you not be on your period. Birth control is just normal hormones (progesterone & estrogen), so imbalancing them doesn't cause much harm - it just alters the shedding of your uterus.
  • I did this to avoid getting my period on my wedding day and having it throughout the HM.  I checked with my doctor first which I recommend you do as well.

  • First and foremost, talk to your doctor.  They know your medical history and what type of medication you are on and will give you the best options available that are safe for you.

When H and I settled on a wedding date/honeymoon date, I counted the months and realized that I would have my period during my wedding and honeymoon.  I know it isn't a huge deal but I just didn't feel like dealing with it.  I called my doctor and asked to switch my BC to seasonale (I had been thinking about doing this for awhile even before I got engaged) so that I would not only skip my period during my wedding and honeymoon I would only have to have my period 4 times a year.  I switched over to the new BC and had absolutley no complications or break through bleeding.  Now, this won't be true for everyone.  So I will go back to my first sentence and say that you should call your doctor and see what he/she would suggest.

  • I am currently on the Nuva Ring which allows me to skip my period and just switch it out with a new one (similar to skipping the placebo's). When I was on the pill I was on a pill that had one level of birth control for the entire three weeks of the pill so skipping my period was not a big deal and it didn't cause spotting because it was just continuing the same amount of hormones. Usually when people experience spotting it is because their birth control is three levels of hormones and it is still going from the highest level of hormones to the lowest when they skip the placebos.

More than likely it will be safe and okay but go with what the other girls said, call your doctor.

  • I have an IUD - Mirena, to be exact - and it's helped 5 million times over with my period. I was one of the few who has a VERY heavy period, and now I'm only spotting, IF THAT!! It's been in for 3 months now, and I feel great and I can't wait to "be one" with my FI in August. ;) Mirena is supposed to eventually elminate my period as well..but as everyone has stated, check with your doctor!

  • more than likely you'd be ok BUT you need to contact your doctor, not strangers on a message board.

I was in the exact same situation.   My doctor said it was ok for me to skip the reminder pills and start the next pack.  She did warn me about possible spotting.  I did it and I had spotting the whole week, sort of like a mini period.  If I could do it over, I'd adjust it ahead of time.
However, a couple of my friends have done this (with Dr.'s permission) and it worked great for them.  There isn't really a way of knowing.

THIS! My doctor approved piggybacking for me on occasion.  Not sure when your wedding, etc, is, but if you have time, I would see if you could piggyback one month, have your period the next two, piggyback another one, and then have your period as normal.  That should put you so your period is done before your wedding, so wedding week and honeymoon you wouldn't have spotting, etc.   Check this with your doc!

ETA: Whoops just checked- obviously you don't have time to pre-piggyback.  So check with your doc but beware the spotting.

<div>yes.  To avoid getting my period on my vacation, I skipped the placebo pills and went to the next package.  It delayed my period for four days then I got the period from hell with massive cramps and voluminous flow.   The timetable for my period was screwed up for the next five months.  According to my doctor, it was save to do.  I would not do it again because the screwed up timetable was miserable. </div>
  • I'm in nuvaring but do this all the time, there is no medical reason to have a period. I just took mine out today so I can have a period this month since gone 3 months without. You'll be fine if u choose to skip. Pretty much the birth control keeps you from ovulating

It's absolutely safe to do so.  If you have doubts, call your OB/GYN and ask.

Your luck with this will likely depend on whether you're on a monophasic or triphasic pill (mono is best for this purpose) You can do it either way safely, but the results won't be as good on a tri. Juts give your doctor a call.

  • Thanks all. Of course I'll definitely call my gyno first!
  • My mother is an OB/GYN and I worked for her for 7 years. Of course, call your doctor, but do it sooner rather than later.

If you have to switch dosages or anything, you'll want to do that months in advance. I just switched my dosages for non-wedding reasons, and it caused more issues than when I started on the pill. So it's best to have a bunch of lead time to deal with any issues that come up, rather than just the one shot to address the issue right before the wedding.

Also, my insurance will only cover a new pack of pills after I've had enough time to get through 3/4 of the last pack (or all the active pills). So you may need some months to time things just right with buying the fresh pack.
  • I did it for years (i would only do the week of placebo pills once every three months)  and was perfectly fine. but yes definetly talk to the doctor to make sure :) I am due for my period the day before my wedding day and i'm not on birth control (fiance had a vasectomy 3 yrs ago-sorry TMI) so i don't know what to do about that-might pull the trick from my teenage years of downing a box of Midol to keep my period away for a few days LOL

I've skipped a lot on a mono pill before - I'm now on a triphasic and have never skipped.  The triphasic has been better for me, so it just is what it is.  Luckilly, I should be period-free for the wedding and honeymoon.
