Name Change and election

So I realized that if I get my name changed right away it won't match what the board of elections has for my voter registration. I really don't want to have to vote a provisional ballot because those don't get counted for at least a week after the election. I also like going to the polling place to vote on election day and feeling like I'm a part of something so voting early is out.

Should I wait until after the election to get my name legally changed? It's like two and a half weeks between the wedding and election day? I'm really tempted to call my board of elections to find out what I need to do.

Re: Name Change and election

  • I have to vote via mail because we will be on our honeymoon during it.  I think you would probably be best to mail it or wait...voter registry is slow.

  • ahh ... i dont know what to tell you... we get home from our hm at midnight on election day so there is no way my name would be changed!
  • When I was married the first time I never changed my name with the elections board but did every where else. I never had a problem voting. I just signed my maiden name wheni went in. I am not saying this is a really good idea though. I would suggest calling your local board of elections.

  • doesn't it take a few weeks for  your name to be officially changed?  if that's the case you probably won't have the official change till after the election.
  • I'm not sure what I'll do. I'm registered to vote in Nashville, and that's where I'll be getting married, but I now live two hours away in Chattanooga. If I can't vote early when I'm home, I doubt I'll be able to make it back to Nashville to do it before i change my name. I wouldn't mind waiting until after election day, I suppose...but like I said, finding the time to get back there after being gone for two weeks will be difficult.

  • I'm voting early before the wedding and honeymoon.  It's unlikely that you would be able to change your name beforehand anyways, since your marriage license would still need to be certified.  If you can't vote early, I would wait until after the election to change your name.  You probably wouldn't have to wait much longer after getting your certified marriage license.
  • I'd suggest just calling the Board of Elections in your county to find out what their advice is.

For those of you who will be away on your honeymoon or destination wedding, I highly suggest contacting the Board of Elections and ordering an absentee ballot. It's not ideal but you shouldn't let the wedding get in the way of you exercising your constitutional right.  Too many women fought too hard for us not to vote! :-)
  • I would wait to change your name.

Me too!  We fly home that day and our flight doesn't come in until 10:30pm.

  • Don't worry, the name change process takes about 3 to 6 months. Follow these name change instructions and you will successfully change your name without a problem and still be able to vote.
