Odyssey Of The Mind: Anyone done it?

Or have kids that have done it?

The school sent home a flyer for it (and unlike so much I get from the school, it's completely grammatically correct and properly spelled), and it sounded interesting. We've been having problems with Bacon complaining about being bored since school started, and it would be nice to challenge her, but if it's going to be an enormous drain on family time, it might not be worth it.

They warn that it's a weekly commitment, as well as the tournament in April, which doesn't sound bad, but could be an underestimation.

  • I did it and loved it!

  • I had never heard of this, but it sounds awesome.
  • I did it.  It's a great program that was also a lot of fun.  The time commitment I remember was a couple of hours every week and a few weekends right before competition (we were procrastinators).  Competition was on a Saturday.  However, our district only offered the program to 6th grade and up, so I can't speak directly to the K-5 time commitment.
  • I did it through most of grade school. It was definitely a lot of fun. It was always a good challenge, a way to inspire creativity, and also helped with learning how to work in a group efficiently.

My 'team' and I would usually get together once a week (maybe twice) for around 2-4 hours. And since we all went to school together, we'd brainstorm things during recess too if we needed to. So it's not a huge time commitment IMO.

I wondered if that thing was still going on. Good to know it is.

  • Cool, thank you. I'll definitely attend the info night.

    The above made me sad.
  • Actual school communication is usually OK, heffa, but the stuff we get from our version of the PTA is ridiculous. I don't know whether or not to cheer them on for being involved in their kids' educations - part of me thinks they might be a hindrance. But then, we all know I love to judge.

  • doit doit doit doit.

It's one of the EXCELLENT . level things that is good for critical thinking and sci. reasoning that exists at the elem level.
And the kids who loved OM do kick-ass when they get to HS and come to my science Oly. tournaments :-)

    I think it's a great program.
(It wasn't in my school growing up but I still did a lot of the activities through a differetn program and I know the peeps who run some of it near my workplace)

(and if they offer an elem. school science olympiad, do that too :-)
  • Hi, I'm new here. I was starting to lurk when I saw this. I did this 3rd-5th grade and it was awesome. We met about once a week after school, and there were a few "work days" on weekends if we took on really elaborate projects. The tournament is neat too. I'd definitely reccommend it for a "bored" kid.

    Boo for bad PTA grammar.

Dear Rain, Not Today. Sincerely, My Parade
  • Thanks, GBCK. She LOVES math and science, and a lot of her "boredom" stems from the push for literacy in the lower grades. She gets a ton of reading and writing, which she knows how to do but doesn't like, and she keeps asking for math. I'm VERY interested in encouraging that.

  • I was a part of it in elementary school - I only have vague memories of it at this point, but I do remember it being a lot of fun, and I made some really great friends because of it.
