1st Time Wedding Dress Shopping - How did your appt go?

So about two weeks ago I had my first appointment to try on wedding dresses.  I tend to like almost everything I see so I was a blank slate for this appointment with the consultant.  I tried on about 6 dresses.  This was such a weird experience for me.  I am a t-shirt and jeans girl.  Some of these dresses are so heavy.  It was so weird to have all that poof around me that gave me a circumference of the moon (which I know can be changed but it just felt unnatural).  I am not discouraged here - just was a HUGE eye opening experience that makes me feel like I will never find the one because I am just not that "into it."

Feedback from anyone - How did your first time go?  How did/do you feel about dress shopping?  Anyone else feel weird the first time?  Am I normal Tongue out for feeling like this?

Well, I love shopping and dressing up so the whole wedding dress shopping experience for me was fantastic.

Just a few things I wanted to comment on though. First, if you don't feel comfortable in a ballgown-style gown then look for something else! There are tons of different silhouettes and styles of wedding gowns - a lot of which aren't very heavy/fussy and will probably better suit your personal style. It may take a bit of research on your part but look around on TK and other wedding sites at the different options! You'll be sure to find something you love!

Secondly, don't get discouraged!! I know it can get a bit frustrating, but don't try on anything you don't like or feel wouldn't look good on you and that right there will narrow down the selections! GL and keep us updated on your progress!

I'm a t-shirt and jean girl too, but I knew the dress would be very important to me and I loved shopping for it.

I agree with g- there are lots of gorgeous dresses that are not poufy/dont have tons of layers.... the bridal lines at Jcrew, nordstrom and whitehouseblackmarket come to mind.  Maybe try on some of those and see if they feel more natural to you!

And don't get discouraged - you will find the right dress for you!  It just might take time for you to first find the sort of material/silhouette you like and THEN find a dress that works with that.  Keep us posted on your future appointments, and you can always post pics here for advice :)

You're feelings are normal, don't worry.  Im mostly a tshirt and jeans (or sweatpants) girl, and I felt exactly the same way...almost dreading shopping.  I also didn't really feel like anybody supported my wedding and wanted to be a part of it, so I was doubly nervous about shopping.

I went kind of spur of the moment, with two friends/old roommates who have been my wardrobe consultant many times, and my Mom.  It was nice, because my friends were used to being honest with me, knew what i liked and what looked good on me.  It was a Tuesday night, and there weren't a lot of other people in the store, which I also liked.  I had no clue what kind of dress I wanted, but I just tried on a variety of styles, until I settled on a style I liked most.  From there I picked the dress I liked most.

I never had a moment where I started crying, but the dress I picked, I just kept on touching, because I loved the feel of the fabric, the dress is an a-line, so it has a train, but its also really easy to move in, and not very heavy.  I just imagined what I would be doing on my wedding day and what kind of pictures I wanted and the dress honestly kind of picked itself.

Don't get discouraged, as the other two said, but don't worry, the feelings you're having are normal!

Don't worry, I'm the same way!  I've gone dress shopping probably 3 times so far, and there wasn't anything I was crazy in love with.. I would just walk up in front of the mirror and say "it's cute" haha.  My wedding isn't until next April, but these months have been going pretty quickly so I know I need to find something in the next 2 months or so.  Last time I went dress shopping, I struck out big time and I was really upset.  Now I've had some time to cool down and explore a little more online.. I have some dresses in mind that I'd like to try on, so next time I go shopping, hopefully I have better luck!

Thanks ladies!  I did try on 3 different silhouettes and the fabrics were real different - some felt cheap.  Oh and the terms of dress shopping - bussel, tulle, pick-ups.  Geeze I felt like I was at my first day of work all over again lol

I hope to walk into Kleinfelds next month and have Randy pick out my perfect dress/price and I go home.  Wink

I just went dress shopping for the first time three days ago and I LOVED it!!  I liked every dress I put on, but I had my heart set on a specific dress before I even got to the store.  I'd kept the picture of it open in my Internet browser on my computer at work all week and looked at it constantly... lol.  Then it looked fantastic on, much better than the other dresses.  So that's my dress for sure!  I'm still thinking of trying on more dresses another time though just because it was a fun experience and I feel like one and a half hours was not nearly enough time to enjoy it!!  Plus, I only took one of my bridesmaids with me, and I know my mom and sister would love to join in the experience.  Definitely looking forward to the next trip.  I wish I could wear a wedding dress every day :-)
