What we're really talking about when we talk about Hillary Clinton not wearing makeup

Because I think it's an interesting topic AND because I think Jezebel articles can be funny as shiit, sometimes.

What Hillary says - "I feel so relieved to be at the stage I'm at in my life right now. Because you know if I want to wear my glasses I'm wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I'm pulling my hair back. You know at some point it's just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention. And if others want to worry about it, I let them do the worrying for a change."

In light of a discussion had yesterday on E about women judging each other for looks and their weight - this topic has always intrigued me.  We are so obsessed with how people look.

Article CN - Hillary Clinton recently went sans-face paint and the media berated her for it.

Thoughts?

[QUOTE]I don't think you need fancy hair and makeup to look professional.  But there's a difference between looking professional and looking unkempt.  And if you're representing your country, I think you should look professional.  Hilary looks unkempt to me.

I agree but I almost wonder if it's because we're so used to seeing her more made-up than that.  If we didn't have a benchmark of her already to judge off of, I don't think I'd find that photo as unkempt TBH.
  • See and to me, she doesn't look THAT unkempt.  Her hair is neat, she is wearing lipstick, and glasses because I assume maybe she was tired or had to be ready in a hurry - the only thing that appears to be missing is some eyeliner or whatever.

  • I think it is pretty ballsy to get up in front of everyone that way with how our society is.  Unfortunately, I think a lot of people are going to be judgemental about this.  This is a weird example, but if you were blind would a concert be better to you because the makeup is better? No. So I don't think it should matter much since we can see.

The media can suck a nut for all I care. More power to her for what she said. I don't care who or what she represents, I think its petty to criticise people based on how well they live up to an image you think they should uphold. Its not like she was wearing a pair of weats with "juicy" on the ass to a foreign conference or something.
  • She doesn't look unkempt to me; she just looks like she's not wearing makeup. I don't wear makeup on a regular basis (maybe once per month if I feel like dressing up for a party or something) so it looks normal to me.

It's a little sad that we associate the way that people actually look somewhat naturally with "unkempt." She doesn't look dirty; her hair isn't dirty or tangled. She doesn't look like she smells bad. I don't see what the big deal is.

I agree, that photo is just all around bad. But, than again sometimes I think the press purposely find "bad"photos.

  • I saw the pictures the other day and I cannot figure out how lipstick no make up. I think it's a stupid thing to worry about in general.

Yeah, I agree with that. If you take a closeup of pretty much anyone's face while they are talking, and don't airbrush it? They're not going to look super sexy. Nobody at that press conference was as close to her as the picture is!
  • That was supposed to say lipstick equals no make up. Stupid mobile site. And I didn't realize the glasses were even an issue? I thought she wore glasses all the time. Just because contacts exist, glasses aren't all of a sudden unkempt.

  • I didn't wear my contacts today, no makeup and I am wearing sweatpants. Oh, and I am not wearing a bra. Judge away.

I think there are some people that are going to go after Hilary no matter what she does. I think she is an incredibly intelligent woman (other than not dumping Bill, but just because I would dump him doesn't mean that she is a bad person for not doing it). Hatters are going to hate.

  • I find it a little annoying that we (general) equate a women walking out of the house without make-up as being news worthy.  Even as someone who does wear make-up daily, it irks me that society says that women are supposed to so.  All a guy has to do to be considered put together (what is the opposite of unkempt, is it kempt?) is put a clean shirt on and brush their hair.  Maybe shave.  I can't even see this being a story if a male politician had been in a similar situation.  If Obama had done a speech, appropriately clothed but with a 5 o'clock shadow, would it have made the news?

  • She doesn't look unkempt to me. She looks like any other woman I see out and about, doing her thing. I don't necessarily think Hilary should be held to a higher standard in terms of her grooming than anyone else, even if she's representing her country. I mean, sure, I'd be side-eyeing her if she showed up at a press conference in a velour tracksuit with her hair in a mess and looking like a slob, but she doesn't look bad to me in that picture. She's aging, yes, and she's probably exhausted.

I'd much rather my political representatives spend their time staying relevant and working toward the betterment of the country than making sure they get their hair did all the time. ;) Then again, our prime minister's hair looks like it's shellacked on, so there's that.
  • I don't think she looks unkempt at all. For sure, she doesn't look attractive to me, though, and that IS partially because she has no makeup on. I'm a product of my environment and I have internalized a specific image of what "pulled together" looks like. So to me she doesn't look disheveled or unprofessional, but she also doesn't look her best or look polished.

But after all of that, I really DGAF as long as she's doing her job.  Like Sept said, I'm way more concerned about the relevent stuff she spends her time on than her appearance. If my country is going to shiit, it doesn't really matter if a leader had a perfectly applied face or not when it happened, kwim?

For real.  Wearing mascara is not a pre-req for being Secretary of State so as long as she's conducting herself professionally and legally and whatever, who the hell cares if she's not wearing eye makeup.  She's fucking busy, for shite's sake.

  • I never wear makeup so I guess I never thought about it being a big deal.

But, I don't think she looks unkempt. I agree with everything Nebb said.
