Registry and Gift Forum

Your opinion is requested because I'm indecisive :)

Hi ladies! I know not everyone chooses to register for fine china, but my fiance and I are because it is what our grandmothers have explicitly told us that they want to buy for us so we'd "better go pick it out!" It's very sweet of them, considering it isn't something that we would have bought for ourselves for quite a few more years (and even then, just a few pieces as a time - this stuff is crazy expensive!).

That said, I don't have a clue what to get. A pattern that I love now could very well be a pattern that I despise in 20 years. I've been to the store and I've looked online, but this pattern keeps sticking in my head. Please tell me what you think :)

(The link was messing up the post so I just copied a few pictures here of the Lenox Vintage Jewel Collection... Thanks Google!)

Thanks!

[QUOTE]In Response to Your opinion is requested because I'm clueless and indecisive :) : Quoted to read better. I think that is a very pretty pattern.

Thanks for quoting. I don't understand why it posted like that! Sorry it's so hard to read.
  • I think that pattern is stunning.  I might actually suggest it to my FI.  :)
  • It's a lovely pattern, it's just not anything I would pick out. It's too dark for my taste.

Good thing I'm not you! If you like it, then go for it!
  • I like it, but like PP said it's not fully to my taste.  Personally it's something I could get tired of.  My pattern is a lot simpler than that for that reason, but if you keep coming back to it then you should go for it.  Even if you grow sort of tired of it it will always be special because it's your wedding china.

I was concerned about that too. You're both right - it is a bit dark.

My mother's pattern is simple white bone china with a thin band of gold on the edges. It's pretty standard, as far as china-that-you'll-never-get-sick-of goes, and also very pretty. Goes with just about everything. I feel that might not always be the case with this set.

PS rlavach - I LOVE that photo of you and your fiance (no pun intended). Too cute!!

Aw, thanks! It totally took me a few sec to get the pun..haha. <div>
</div><div>Oddly enough, I'm really into patterns and crazy bright colors. Yet when it comes to my wedding and to our wedding china, I didn't want that. I really wanted something classic, yet not old fashioned. </div><div>
</div><div>FWIW, this is what we went with. I really hope I get it!!!</div><div>

  • Vintage Jewel is my favorite pattern! I love that the accent plate is a color inverse of the rest of the dinnerware.

Since the trend with china these days is white on white, this pattern offers something different that keeps it visually interesting, I think. Plus, it reminds me of 40s glamour. It's just so elegant, you know?

  • Is that Noritake? If so, I also have that one on my registry at Macy's right now along with two or three other sets (the registry is still "private" so no one stumbles upon it while I'm still trying to whittle it down and piece it together, bit by bit). I keep looking at patterns and asking myself if they're "classic." I also tend to have more colorful and eclectic tastes, just not when it comes to my dinner table!
  • It's NMS.

We went with Opal Innocence Stripe.

  • I think it's beautiful!
  • I think it's nice, but not my style. If you love it, go for it! :)

We have simple tastes in china, but wanted something a little different for our china and we wanted to make sure that the pattern would look good no matter how we redecorate our dining room. I think that helps to make sure you like it in 20 years - will it look good in a room that's changed after 20 years?

We ended up with this, "Floral Illustrations" from Marchesa by Lenox - the pattern is actually in gray, not a black as shown here.

  • I think that is a gorgeous pattern, but TBH I would probably get sick of it after a couple of years.

FI and I are only registering for accent plates, but this is the patten we chose:

  • I agree with retread that you shouldn't register for something you'll only use on holidays, but I think that whatever you register for should be usable during holidays - mine is white so it's neutral but when my mother got married she was trying to decide between a red and a blue pattern.  She everntually went with red because the major holidays she and my dad celebrate tend to have red tones to them (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July), etc.  Some holidays do have blue as well but she didn't think it was as versatile for their lifestyle.  Of course, she eventually got holiday and spring china also so maybe she was being silly... but for a long time she used her formal china for everything, all times of the year.

A counter example is my mother's best friend who registered for Lenox "Autumn" when she got married - it's lovely, and very exquisite, but it has an honest to goodness cornucopia in the middle of the plate.  So she ended up using it one season out of the year, primarily for Thanksgiving, and that's it.  She has since tried to pass off that china to anybody who will take it, but nobody will for that reason.

I do like that the Vintage Jewel would look nice during the holidays - you could easily pull together a gold table during those times of the year and then the black band would provide a nice accent, instead of making the plates look dark.  I think my bigger concern would be whether it's so formal that you wouldn't use it all that often.  Some women love to set a formal table, and I think that's fantastic.  If you anticipate doing this often enough, go for it.  If not, I'd probably pass in favor of something that's just as high quality but maybe a little less formal.  My pattern is Lenox Pearl Platinum.  It's white, with a silver rim, and white beading around the edge, and that's really it.  It's elegant but not so formal that I would feel compelled to break out the crystal stemware and silver platters every single time I used it.

  • Hoffse, you feel free to tell your mom's friend that I accept any and all free china. ;)

  • We registered for the Vintage Jewel by Lenox. Have you seen it in person? It is stunning! The pictures do not do it justice.
  • I saw it in person and still loved it. I just have a hard time picturing it in our dining room when we haven't even bought a home yet (much less picturing it in our dining room 20 years from now!). I'm having a hard time making a lot of registry choices for just that reason. It's difficult to pick out a comforter, sheets, towels, cookware, etc. when you have no idea how you're going to decorate the rooms where those things are going to be for however long you own your home. Fun, but a little frustrating too :)

I feel ya on that one. We just recently got an apartment, but haven't even moved in yet. So, it was hard to pick items for an apartment that doesn't exist. Even harder to pick items that will work in this imaginary apartment & also in an imaginary future home. <div>
</div><div>Don't over sweat things like bedding. That can easily be changed for a minimal price in compared to china. When you move later on, you may change your whole style & choose all new colors that your bedding might not go with. It's not that expensive to replace it. Plus, those things wear out a lot faster than fine china does. That stuff is indestructible! </div>
  • that is very nice, not my taste but still beautiful!!!

My FI and I went for something simple we chose the lenox pearl platinum collection.  Its bone chna and has a small accent of a band of platinum and a band that looks like a strand of pearls.  We wanted to keep it simple so we don't get tired of it.

If you love it and keep coming back to it, I think thats a sign you should go for it!!
