Test tubes?

I've been thinking of a cheap but cute favor for a fall wedding. I started to think about a custom mulling spice mix in some cute packaging. I didn't think of a good, sealed package until I was in the lab working with some bacterial cultures (I'm a scientist) and looked at some 15ml centrifuge tubes. They're sealed, sterile, have orange lids, an easily labeled surface, and I can get them for dirt cheap.

Is this too weird? :)

I think that is a really cute idea actually.  You can easily personalize them with labels, etc., and the fact that the packaging reflects your career is a cute detail in my opinion!  Good luck!

I would rather they be packaged differently unless you had a science-themed wedding.

I think the idea is cute, but I honestly would feel a little odd about using spices out of a test tube once I got home.

From one science girl to another --- GO FOR IT!!

I think it's a great idea.  It reflects who you are and it's unique!! Wink

I love the idea, but I also spend plenty of time in a Micro lab. I think if your guests are also in similar fields and/or know you are a scientist if would be received well. I think you need to think about who your guests are and whether or not they would understand. Have you considered screw top vials?

Being a lab rat myself I would love this idea.  However, some of your non-science guests may think this is a bit odd.  Maybe get the glass test tubes that do not have a lid and use some nice fabric (use squares or something) then tie a ribbon around in a bow to secure.

My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

I bought some borosilicate test tubes and corks to use as stoppers online for our favors.   I bought 100 of each for maybe $25 total and I still have 50 left.

Personally, I think that something like that looks better than the kind you actually use in lab (with the blue or orange plastic top) because they're a little more old-fashioned and IMO just look more attractive.  I work in a lab with the orange top conicals every day, and I would be a little weirded out if I saw them with food in them because I would wonder if they came straight out of your lab and had thus been exposed to anything undesirable.  Someone brought eggnog in the 50-mL conicals to our Christmas party last year, and no one would touch them.

    Thanks everyone for the feedback!

@LauraT25, that's a great idea! I've never used those in lab, so I didn't even think of them. Can you tell me where you got them, and/or be willing to sell your leftovers?

I googled and just searched for the cheapest option - which turned out to be a place called Lake Charles Manufacturing.  How many do you need?  I would be more than willing to sell them, but I would feel awful if there weren't enough.  I will count them when I get home to make sure.

They're sitting in a closet right now, and they were so cheap I would only charge for shipping - I think I can get them in one of those flat rate boxes for less than $6.

Well, we are hoping for 100 guests at the wedding. Just let me know what you have, thanks.

I've also looked at Lake Charles. What size did you use?

I had to dig through my e-mail, but here is what I ordered:

63A116x92mm Polystyrene Plastic Tubes - Single
    100
    20A1Cork Stoppers (Size 5) - Single
    100

They were running a sale (30% off, maybe?), I'm not sure if that's a normal thing or not for them.  I can let you know how many we have left and maybe you can just order more of the same to supplement?  I also found some other sites that were selling them, which came up in my e-mail search:

    www.testtubesonline.com
    www.carolina.com

Maybe you could check those out, as well?  We were consideirng using Erlenmeyers to hold our table numbers initially, and carolina.com had them for the lowest price at the time, I believe.

I think that it is a fun idea. Like pp said, they serve drinks in test tubes at clubs, and I've seen sugar candy in them, so why not something else? As long as you present them nicely, I think they'd be a hit.

Thats a cute idea! I've seen test tubes filled with Jelly beans as favors, and also test tubes filled with shots that are served throughout the evening.

I think while it's great to find something that represents you, it is a little weird. What will people do with it? It won't matter that you can get them for dirt cheap if you'll be picking them up at the end of the night on the peoples' plates who did not take them.

I'm all for utility and function, but even I can't think of what I'd do with a sterile test tube.

I'm also a scientist, and I love the idea! I agree with PP though, a glass test tube would be better with corks...maybe decorated with ribbon or something. Your guests will get it....if you know them well enough to invite them to your wedding...I would hope they know what you do for a living and would find humor in it!

Good luck! If you decide to do this I would love to see a pic!

This is an awesome and personalized favor idea! Go for it! You can even use that pen to mark them that won't even wash off if crazy chemicals get on it.  Gotta love bio lab supplies!!!

I'm a chemistry student and FLOVE this idea! I like the test tube/cork stopper idea better than the centrifuge tube idea, as other posters have said. I second the picture thing--if you do go with this, please post a pic!
