Makeup question

Hey Ladies. I just had a quick question. I generally do not wear too much makeup, and i was wondering in you all's opinions which are some good brands of makeup that are long lasting. My sister is doing my hair and makeup. She went to cosmotology school, but is not a professional makeup artist or anything. So i just wanted to make sure i got some good quality products! Thanks for any tips!

Re: Makeup question

  • Do you have a MAC store near you?  If so I would go there with your sister and ask one of the makeup artists on staff what they recommend for best all day coverage.  I would also tell them that you usually are pretty natural when it comes to makeup so they know what best items would work for you.

  • I've heard great things about MUF's HD foundation. You should be able to find it at Sephora, or even online.
    Praying for a miracle!
  • I used Smashbox for my wedding and it stayed perfect for 18 hours.

Go with MUF (Make-up Forever) HD Coverage or Smashbox, both are long lasting and photograph great. However, they can be a little heavy if you're not used to makeup. If you want to look more natural, Clinique has great foundation and I think you may be more comfortable in it.
  • I dont mind going heavier on the makeup for my wedding day. i usually only do eyeshadow, eyeliner and mascara. (It just annoys me how easy my foundation will rub off on my cellphone or whatever or i'll sweat it off in the summer.) I wear foundation and powder when i go out something. I just dont generally wear it to work. I work in a hardware store so i don't see the need for alot of makeup.I have never heard of Smashbox. Where can i get something like that. I live in a small  Missouri town.
  • I wear MUF HD and I swear by it.
  • I know Ulta has smashbox, but it may be located in a bigger city. I think it's a little cheaper than MUF, but am not 100% sure. Your best bet would be to take your sister into Ulta, tell them what you're looking for, and try on different things. Ulta has tons of professional brands so you'll be able to try different things on. They also have drugstore products in the store so you guys can pick out things like eyeliner (a $7 eyeliner will work just as well as a $30 one). They also have drugstore and professional hair products so you can stock up on anything you need hair wise. It may be a bit of a drive to get to one, but you could make a day out of it and you can get everything you need beauty wise, try on tons of products, and be comfortable in your choices.

  • Yeah from the places you girls are suggesting i'll probably have to go to st louis or kansas city because i have never heard of any of those places!  See.. definately makeup illiterate right here! Generally i wear just cheap walmart eyeshadows, liner and mascara and my foundation and powder are mary kay. (and they rub off easily!)
  • I would suggest making the trip to a bigger city (if it's not too far).  Quality make-up can be kinda pricey, so I'm sure you'll want to wear it after your wedding.  The in-store make up artists can help you pick out stuff that's dressy enough for your wedding, but casual enough for everyday.  They can also help you with a few tricks and ideas so you can learn more about make-up.

I would be cautious buying online. You'll want to get matched (since each brand of foundation varies somewhat by color) and looking at a picture is a lot different than trying something on your skin.

  • I would go to your local Sephora and tell them your getting married and need a good quality foundation, etc. They can help you pick the right colour and kind for your skin.

That being said, my MUA used Make Up Forever HD on me and I LOVED it. Lasted all day (11 am -  1 am) and never ran/got too oily.

  • Thank you girls!! You have definately been helpful! I will definatley look inside the JC Penny's we have near here. I usually see alot of makeup places in the mall to (nearest mall is 45 minutes away)  :o    i just have never checked them out. Im actually making a trip to buy FI's wedding band in a couple days so i'll have to do some looking around and take my sister when we both have a day off. Thanks for the tips! I'll have to do some poking around online.  We did my hair trial yesterday so that was fun and exciting!  As for hair products im all hooked up. My sister is a  hair stylist and has about everything.

  • The bigger brands you can get online, but you can't really try them out first. Though Sephora has a great return policy. I think Ulta lets you return things you don't like too. Is there a JC Penney in your area? Many of the stand alone stores have Sephoras in them now. If there's a suburban area somewhere near you, there's usually an Ulta in a shopping center.

But if you're wanting drugstore variety stuff, my mom and I are both pretty religious lovers of Covergirl foundation. I use the Clean foundation for everyday, because it looks very natural and it doesn't clog my pores. For my wedding, and all special occasions, I wear their Advanced Radiance. I work at a Renaissance Festival here in Texas in the summer, and that's what I wear for the days I'm working. I'm out in the sun wrangling giant horses and heavy equipment in triple digit heat, and though I do sweat a bit of it off, it stays on. And at the end of the day people would always ask me what my secret is. Granted, what works for my skin may not work for yours, but I've tried several other foundations and just can't find one I like better.

For powder I use Physician's Formula, eyeliner I use Rimmel and eyeshadow I usually use Ulta brand, but I also like ELF, which is usually at Target or can be found online. Their Studio line is pretty nice, and really inexpensive.
  • I do have  a JcPenny's about 45 minutes away. I'll have to check it out!
  • Honestly, you can buy cheap drugstore stuff and it will work pretty good, but I highly recommend investing in a good primer. I like the Too Faced primer a lot, it makes all my makeup stick where it's supposed to and last all day.

<div> Mary Kay SUCKS! Almost became a representative, but then I sampled their make up! My cheap Walmart makeup did far better than Mary Kay, that's for damn sure! I heard airbrush makeup is really nice, but it does cost a pretty penny... I, myself, prefer a liquid foundation set with a translucent powder, add some bronzer and you got the 'Day-Of' glow! MAC is great, too.</div>

<div>Yeah. The Mary Kay foundation i have rubs off so easily! On a good note it was free lol. My sister sold it for a while and gave it to me outta her kit. But i cant even talk on my cellphone with out it rubbing off of my face!</div>
  • I agree with Make Up Forever-really great foundation. I also love Dior's Airflash-pricey but soo good!

  • For my friends wedding we had someone come and do airbrush makeup.  Lasted all day so much so that the bride still had it on the next morning and she looked great.

  • If you arent big on makeupbut want something that will last, try Bare Minerals. I have tried just about every makeup out there and bare minerals has been the best i have found. I break out easily and MAC makeup is the worst offender for problematic skin bare minerals gives me great coverage and lasts all day and is so easy to touch up if necessary Air brush is tricky... it seeps into your skin, so if someone wearing lipstick kisses ur cheek ur either stuck with the lipstick mark or you end up wiping your makeup off that spot. So do a trial and see what you think before making a comittment to anything . Good luck.
