Bad Luck?

My Mom says its bad luck if we use the items we got at the shower before the wedding. What do you think?
We are hauling them from the shower location to our house, about 500 miles away....And not supposed to use them for 2 months. Hm....

Re: Bad Luck?

  • Ettiquette does dictate that you should not use wedding gifts before the wedding date. This is because if the wedding is called off for any reason, you can return the gifts to their sender. Some people are superstitous/traditional like my Fi, and so we won't be using anything until the wedding. But, most people say to go ahead and use them, just don't tell anyone, and be prepared to re-buy any gifts you have used if the wedding gets called off.

  • It's bad etiquette to use them before the wedding.  Since they are gifts given to you because of your wedding, they are to be returned if the wedding doesn't happen due to the unforseen - wedding getting called off, a tragic accident, etc.

Or is this another trick question?
  • A lot of people use them before the wedding and have no problems at all.  If you want to use them, just be prepared to buy new ones to return if need be.

  • If the wedding were to be called off or not take place as planned, you'd need to give back the gifts you received at the shower in their original state.  The gifts are for you and your FI once you're married - not for how you are right now.

I also told DH that we'd have ugly children if we used the gifts before the wedding.

Its not bad luck. It is, however, bad etiquette. If for any reason the wedding doesn't happen, you have to return the gifts, unused, to the sender.
