My aunt is doing my cake. Should I be safe or be me? PIP heavy

So I wasn't really given a choice: My aunt is doing the cake for the wedding. Not that she's bad or anything and I would have picked her, but anyway. FI and I are very "odd" and want a creative sort of cake, as opposed to the traditional cake. Here are some of the cakes my aunt has done:

So I know mya aunt does a great job, and its her gift to us, so that's a BIG help. I know I'm just going to do a small 3-tiered ckae for the "cutting" and then we're going to have a couple 1/2 sheet cakes for serving, since our guest list is 200 and we don't want a huge cake. Here's an idea of what we want:

We want the tipped tiers with the bottom other pic's design, with blue instead of pink. She told me she could do the design, but she's never done the tipped tiers. She said she'd try it if that's what we want.

  • Those tipped tiers are not for the novice so if she has never done them before then that might not be the best option.

I see she makes some more "traditional" cakes, ie - 80's ish.  You could get a newer book on wedding cakes and sit down with her and show her what you want.
  • If you would like the tipped tier its really not that hard as it looks. Let your aunt know to do the tipped tier she just cuts a a circular chunk out of the bottom and middle tier to give the next tier a flat surface to sit on. It gives the effect of a topsy turvy look but still has the stability of a regular cake. All the tiers should look like the bottom tier in the picture (a normal round with just some of the top trimmed to give it a slanty look).

  • Is your aunt available on my wedding day?  And will she deliver to Albany NY?  I'm having such a hard time finding a decorator I like!  LOL.

Anyways, I agree with PP about the ability to do a topsy turvy.  Maybe she can make a two tier as a birthday cake to try it out, and see how it turns out, before the wedding?

I'm sure if you paid her enough she would deliver there haha. And my birthday is in a few weeks. I may have to request a cake... lol

  • Ask her if she would mind doing a trial run? Maybe just one or two tiers. If it's a bust, then it's not a big deal. If it works, you might have just made her a lot of money with future cake orders. But the cakes are beautiful, even if they aren't tipped.
