RD- Who pays?

I was going through a list of place to have our RD, when I realized I didn't know who was suppose to be paying! Are my FI and I suppose to pay? FI Mom & dad? OR the guest?

Re: RD- Who pays?

  • Tradition is that the grooms parents pay for the rehearsal dinner and the Brides parents pay for the wedding..but since more and more people are paying for their own weddings, I'm not sure how much of a tradition it is anymore that the grooms parents pay for the rehearsal dinner anymore either.. I'm guessing someone else will have better input on that.  We were originally paying for ours since FI's parents couldn't afford it. But then my parents insisted on us having a big one and invite all the out of town guests, which is most of our invitees and so offered to pay for it as well, so we're letting them.

  • Hmm, maybe we should sit down with his family, mine and us and see if maybe we could all just help pay it :)

  • We're paying for our RD. FMIL offered after I had already arranged it with Fazoli's but since she is hosting a secondary party for us so FI's family who can't travel can celebrate with us, we declinded.

  • hmmmm, maybe just bring it up as we were thinking about x restaurant for the rehearsal dinner, what do you think?

If they haven't brought it up yet, maybe FI's family isn't going to pay.

  • FIL's are paying for ours but it's only because they offered.  If they hadn't offered we would be paying for it ourselves (we're also paying for the wedding ourselves).  Assume you will be paying for it yourself unless someone else offers.

  • Definitely don't ask them if they're paying. It was tradition for the groom's parents to pay, but it's not so much that way anymore. If they haven't offered, then you and FI pay for it yourselves. It's rude to ask for money, and it would be embarrassing for them if they couldn't pay, and it definitely puts them on the spot. No one is supposed to pay for anything unless they offer.

  • There is no set...this person has to pay. Like PP traditionally the brides family paid for the wedding and grooms family for the RD. But now so many couples are paying for their own stuff. We haven't been traditional at all. We've paid for most of the wedding. FI's parents are hosting the reception and we're doing all of it ourselves..no catering. And my Mom is cooking for the RD but it'll just be at the Church after the rehearsal.

  • I agree with Brittney, to not ask. We are paying for about 95% of the wedding, and I was stressed about where to go and how much to spend for the RD. I finally just decided on doing pizza and having people bring their own drinks (we will provide some of course still), because it was cheaper and fit in our budget if anyone didn't offer to pay. However, FI's mom asked me what we were doing and offered to pay for it instead.

  • If someone offers to host the RD, they pay (don't ask!).  If no one offers to host it, you and your FI pay.  Under no circumstances should your guests be paying.  If you're not having a rehearsal, you do not need to have a rehearsal dinner.
  • We're paying for ours.

Its really not ok to ask or hint around that you'd like them to. Especially this late in the game.

  • Alright, I gotcha y'all. I think we will just be paying for it ourselves! Which is just fine with us :)
