Las Vegas! (NWR)

Going to Vegas in about 6 weeks. Never been. Pretty excited.
We are going with a few friends. I have a discount off the strip and we will be staying at an Embassy Suites. They have a shuttle to the strip though and to the airport.

So far we have planned:
Love Cirque Du Soleil
The Deuse Transportation (Up and down the strip and to the outlet malls!)
Going to The Golden Nugget one morning to learn how to play table games. We have a basic understanding of Craps and Texas Hold'em but the others. Then probably spending the rest of the day downtown and that night on Fremont St.

Any other suggestions or recommendations? One of our friends is kind of on a budget so we are looking for cheaper things but some nice things would be fine too (We are probably going to split up sometimes). The Fountain Show, The Volcano and the TI show all free and maybe going to do them all.

Thanks Ladies!

  • Make sure you see the Conservatory at the Bellagio.  Just walking in and out of the hotels is fun and free.  April 15-21 is Spa Week so if that is the week you are there, you could try one of the strip hotel spas.  (You can also buy day passes for around $40 and have use of the facilities without getting a treatment.)  Go to HH at Rhumbar before Love. Maybe go for drinks/dinner at one of the bars or restaurants with a view of the strip (Mix at Mandalay Bay, Voodoo Lounge at Rio, Level 107 at Stratosphere.)  See the wildlife habitat at the Flamingo.

Hee, Spa Week is actually all over the country--I go here in Dallas every year.  There will be a list of spas that offer $50 treatments, but that will include access to all the other amenities like steam room, whirlpools, relaxation areas, etc.  It's a great way to spend an entire day at a spa for $50.  The list comes out Monday actually and you can start making appointments.

Vegas.com is also a good site to see all the attractions and stuff, including stuff that is free.

If you are going downtown, the mob museum is supposed to be great.

  • I love Vegas! If you like to go out travezoo has a deal on a club tour right now. My friends and I go to Vegas a couple times a year and we have bought this same deal a few times. It starts usually at Vanity in hard rock which is OK but then goes to planet Hollywood which I always have fun at and them pure in ceasars palace which is really nice. It is well worth the money and we have always had a lot of fun with the people on the bus. Have fun!!
  • We thought Love was fabulous! I am so jealous you are going to see it. I want to see it again.

As PP said, it's a lot of fun to just walk into the different hotels/casinos because each is so unique from the other. I would go online to check for Vegas coupons. We got a BOGO for a celeb impersonator show at the Stratosphere that was pretty good and BOGO for the wax museum. Both of those things were very affordable.

I know a lot of hotel casinos do the free lessons for different table games. Flamingo did one for craps maybe and roulette? The gondola ride at the Venetian is kind of cheesy, but fun. I honesty don't remember how much it is, but I know if you share the gondola with another couple it's cheaper.

My biggest suggestion is just to walk the strip and check out all the different hotels and casinos, especially if you've never been before. We spent 4 days there in '08 (and I had been to Vegas twice previously) and we took up a whole lot of our time there just sightseeing.

    Vacation
  • We will be there for 3 1/2 days. So not a whole lot of time. But we aren't huge gamblers or drinkers so we should have a lot of time to do the things we want to do. I have been doing a ton of research and it should be a ton of fun but I just thought you ladies would be helpful, and of course you are!

  • Make sure you see the fountains on a weekend night (if you're there on a weekend).  Those are the best shows.  The volcano is fun.  The Sirens at TI is lame.

Penn & Teller was my favorite show ever.  Fremont St. was pretty cool, but there's not a ton to do there.  However, drinks are cheaper there than on the strip.

The Neon Boneyard tour was pretty cool, but will require an expensive cab ride there and back.  The Atomic museum was interesting too, if you're into history at all.

  • Check out all the free attractions (Bellagio fountains, Mirage fire, Bellagio gardens, Forum Shops @ Cesars, Canal Shops @ Venetian, etc).  And also just walk through a couple of the casinos.  Wear comfortable shoes & sunscreen!!  Also drink lots of water!  In 6 weeks, Vegas will likely be in the high 80's - mid 90's.

Buy show tickets from Tix4Tonight booths

For cheap meals, eat during happy hour.  Most of the bars have some great deals.

It's a little pricey, but for something unique, go to Minus 5 bar (there's one in Mandalay Bay & Monte Carlo).  It's an ice bar, hence the name, it's negative 5 Celsius inside (28F).  It's $30 to get in, which includes all the winter wear and one drink.  Everything from the seats to the bar to the glasses are made of ice.  I tried to get my H to go last time we were there, he complained about the price, but then dropped $40 into a slot machine in less than 10 minutes...um yeah, I would have rather had a cool (pun intended) experience than lose money to a machine, so that justifies the price to me.  LOL.

Sounds like you'll have a great time.

DH & I usually put $5 in a few of the 1-cent slot machines for fun and play a few hands of $10 blackjack during the late mornings/early afternoons.

So long as you set a strict budget for the gambling, it is so much fun!

We saw Cirque Zumanity and that was different and fun (definitely an adults only show...but that's part of the alure of Vegas!)

We love the breakfast buffet at the Wynn.
  • If you want to learn table games (Craps/Blackjack) make sure to head down to Casino Royale on the strip. They have $3 Craps table and also Blackjack tables. We played some craps the last time and we got our money back and then some.

Also check out goldstar.com for free day shows. You just have to pay the processing fee depending on the show.

    Have fun!
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • I'll be in RENO,my favorite casino's.Staying at CIRCUSCIRCUS though. They have a sportsbook where we can bet on horses! I love that! And i love roulette and slots!
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Oh, also?  You probably won't have time, and it's pricey, but we did a desert ATV tour, and it was phenomenal.  It takes about 7 hours out of your day, but we were back at our hotel by 4.  We even considered doing their other ATV tour the next day (we went through Awesome Adventures).

We were going to the Golden Nugget, they have $1 bets and lessons every day for pretty much ever table game from BlackJack to Roulette and Craps and Texas Hold'Em. We have played Craps and really like it, it has been a while though. My husband and his friend really want to play Texas Hold'Em.

OMG. This sounds amazing. I have been playing this game on Facebook trying to get free comps through MLife and I just checked and the Minus5 is on there. So we can get two free drinks and entry for two. I told my husband WE HAVE TO GO! How neat! I am kind of excited. That is why I love asking people! You find neat stuff like that.

I have a bookmark of a list of happy hour places on my phone. :-)

That actually sounds amazing. My friend just ended up dropping out this week so it will just be the three of us so we aren't really on as much of a budget anymore. I still like value and good deals but something like that sounds awesome. We did see some ads for that stuff and the car buggy scooter things and thought it sounded fun. I will have to see what they think and if we can swing it. :-)

Does anyone know how hard/easy it is to get to the Hoover Dam and maybe do a tour?

  • Definitely ditto everyone else who said to just walk through the different hotels and casinos, especially since you've never been there before.  The TI show is trashy, but definitely make sure you hit the Bellagio fountains.   Hash House a Go Go is one of our faves for breakfast (and I think they're open 24 hours now if you want some late night food after drinking).
