Traditional African BM dresses?

I remember we have a few ladies here who are Nigerian can you tell me what is a reasonable price for the traditional bridesmaid dresses? I'm thinking of having my BM buy the fabric and i'll pay someone to sew. Anyone have any guesstimates??

A picture of something similiar to what I want. The material is lace.

The fabric in the picture you posted looks more like ANKARA which is cheaper than Lace (costs around $30-50 for 5 yards which should be enough for a dress). Lace can be upwards of $180 for 5 yards. The tailoring cost varies - can be upwards of $120 depending on the type of detail involved on the dress. We're actually sending ours back to Nigeria to have a good friend of my mom make our outfits. More power to you if you decide to pay for their tailoring Smile

Like Hatroops says, it all depends. If you're on facebook, check out Eleganza Fashions. They have TONS of lace and Ankara in all prices so that should give you some ideas.
We got out lace there as did my sisters. The ankara for my sisters and hubby & my aso-oke (the one worn to the Nigerian ceremony) came directly from Nigeria.
My reception lace was sewn by Bewaji. Her website is www.bewaji.com
She lives in Baltimore but accepts orders from all over the world.

If you're interested in seeing pics from our wedding with the different materials being used, PM me.

    Hope that helps.

Like others, the fabric in your picture is ANKARA.

My bridesmaids will be wearing ankara when they change clothes during the reception. We got the fabric from Nigeria, as well, because it's cheaper. Fortunately, my mother sews, so she will be making the clothes for them.

If you know any Nigerians that would be able to get the fabric for you directly from Nigeria, it will be IMMENSELY cheaper (like the equivalent of $15 for 5 yards).

My suggestion would be if you want to pay for the tailoring, I would find ANYONE who you trust to do the tailoring. It's fabric like any other fabric and you wouldn't need to have a tailor that specializes in ankara.
