October 2012 Weddings

took my first pregnancy test...

I was on hardcore medication for sinusitis recently and I wasn't sure if it would reduce the effectiveness of BCP.  and we had a lot of sex...

but today I got super paranoid thinking I could possibly be pregnant (I'm pretty sure it's way too early to tell) so I took a test over lunch break.  It said I'm not pregnant which is what I expected to see but I'm still kinda concerned.  I'm going to wait for several days and take another test,

Re: took my first pregnancy test...

  • what makes you think you're pregnant? are you TTC?

hope I'm not out of line, but you posted that you were a virgin until your wedding night (which is GREAT!).  I know when I was first sexually active with H, I always 'thought I was pregnant'.  Ever little thing made me paranoid.  If I was a day or two late, had a little spotting, had cramps, whatever...I always jumped to the conclusion that I must be pregnant.  I never was :p  you might just be paramoid because it's a whole new experience.

we ae NOT TTC but I know that some strong meds can make BCP ineffective. I am certainly paranoid and yeah, it is all new to me...but I took the test to make myself feel better.

  • There are actually very few medications that reduce the effectiveness of BCP. I've been on the pill for 10 years now and the only thing that I've ever taken that needed a backup method of BC was antibiotics.

When you get a new medication, it's best to ask the doctor or your pharmasist if it affects the BCP.

  • Agree with PPs; all I've heard about to be careful with in terms of BCP is antibiotics.

Ditto this!  I've completely been there, and taken many unnecessary tests.  I wouldn't worry about it until you are actually late.

  • Antibiotics helped me welcome my 2nd son! I am from an extremely fertile family, the same thing happend to on of my sisters. She had one child on oral contrceptives with NOTHING to interfere, and her other child on oral contraceptives and antibiotics!

    I can understand your concern!

  • i spoke to the pharmacist and they said the meds i was on don't reduce the effectiveness of BCP. phew!  we are in no way ready for a baby now!
  • I was on some antibiotics in early October and I was late in November, which is weird since I am on BC and I always start the exact same day of the week when my pack finishes.  I was a little freaked out at first, but then I kinda started getting excited.  H was getting excited too but in the end, I am not pregnant.  I guess having this little "scare" made me realize that I don't want to wait much longer for a baby, but I think we will be waiting at least another six months or so to pay off a little more debt before another huge expense is added.

Anyway, just be sure to use extra protection when taking any antibiotic just in case, especially if you do not want to get pregnant right now.

    Phew! <div>
</div><div>To be safe though it's always best to ask the pharmacist if any new medication changes the effectiveness of BCP. They don't always tell you, especially women that appear to be in their mid-late 20s since they just seem to assume that we've all been on the pill forever.</div>

  • I know a few people who got pregnant on BCP with antibiotics... like PP said always ask the pharmacist...

We aren't using anything...and let happen what happens... turns out it happened right away! lol
I know I had taken 2 tests right when I was dueish to start ( I am never regular) and they were negative... a week later... took another one and it was positive... (took 2 more to be sure) in the next weeks and yep... we are at 9 weeks plus now...

  • I always use back-ups when on antibiotics - extremely fertile family as well.  Usually use a condom until 24 hours after the last antibiotic taken.

Also, best time to take a pregnancy test is the first pee in the morning... just FYI for next time.

  • Also just a note for future reference..a test won't pick up a positive until time for your period, some are lucky and get a few days sooner and some don't get it until after it is late. If you are ever late and get a negative you should continue to test weekly until you get a positive or your period..best thing is to be extra careful since you are not ready.

I've always been told 7 days or better yet until the end of your pack, have your period and then go back to just using BCP.
