non-floral centerpieces

I recently had the idea to get vintage bird cages and put two love birds in each one and use them as centerpieces at the wedding. Do you think this would be weird? I think it is kind of romantic and adorable, but I'm not sure if it would come across as too cheap to pay for flowers or just too weird.

And for anyone who is wondering, no we would not keep the birds but we would bring them back to the store we got them from the day after the wedding for an 80% refund (I've already spoken to the petstore about this).

TIA

Birds are living creatures, not wedding decor.  Besides all the obvious reasons, who wants to watch birds poop while they are eating?  It's a terrible idea, sorry.

  • I think it would be better with little cute fake birds.  There are some really cute stuffed ones out there.  The idea of looking at a real bird while eating/drinking doesn't sound appetizing to me.  They do stink and are loud, and if there is alcohol, I bet money someone opens the cage...

  • Birds = feathers, poop, seeds getting everywhere. When they drink they shake their heads afterward, flicking water everywhere.  As a guest I would think this was gross and weird.

Not to mention that with all the noise, moving them around, and new environment, they are going to be INCREDIBLY stressed out.  Birds are exquisitely sensitive creatures, and exposing these animals to such a stressful environment is just not a good idea.  Not to mention that birds from petstores (and especially one that would be willing to be in on this plan) don't take great care of their birds - I've seen plenty with mites crawling on them, and they can carry diseases that people might get such as psittacosis - terrible to have around immune-suppressed people such as the elderly.

I like the vintage birdcage idea.  Perhaps you could put some beautiful birds of paradise flowers in them? Or other beautiful colorful flowers?
  • Yeah-not feeling this at all.  Living creatures should not be used for decor.  There's just too much that can go wrong that some pps have listed.  Please re-think this idea.  The birdcage is cute. But fill the cage with something other than live animals.

  • Yeah - Don't use the birds, you might end up offending your guests if they feel the same as some previous posters.

If it helps, I found this website that has a lot of non-floral centerpieces, maybe you can find what you're looking for:

Gross. Okay, nix the birds. Thanks, everyone!
  • Please do not do this. I for one hate birds, I know I will not be a guest at your wedding but there may  be people that feel the same way as I.  Also it is not a good idea to have animals where you have to eat except for seeing I dogs which have better manner than most people. When i first started reading your post I thought you were talking fake birds which I think could be cute.  I am not having flowers as center pieces, no one says you have to.

Definitely no real birds! However, I do like the idea of fake birds...I think someone already said this. You can go to www.etsy.com & they have a ton of cute fake birds! Wink
  • The cages can be cute with candles inside instead of birds. :)

I'm against using animals, birds, or fish for decor. What would you do  with the birds at the end of the night?

    Candles in cages? Stunning. :)

ooo - great idea yourlittlestars! if i didn't already have centerpieces i'd totally do this. Candles in cages - fab!
  • LOVE the idea of candles in birdcages.

If you want to incorporate real birds - maybe have some doves released at your ceremony?

  • PS - I'm having a variety of mosaic centerpiecs with candles in them for my centerpieces - the mosaic glass makes the candle light really sparkle.  I got an awesome deal on them at Kohl's, otherwise they would have been more expensive than having floral centerpieces.  Gotta love the 65% off sale, plus 30% coupon, plus Kohl's cash.  :-)
