October 2012 Weddings

first dance

My wedding is about 2 months away (eek!) and we have yet to practice our first dance.  we chose the song (you and me by lifehouse) but thats it.  my fiance had said we should take dance lessons but i think it's too late now and we are too busy.  we have actually only danced together once at another wedding and i'm a little worried we will look like idiots.

should we try to find lessons somewhere? are there any good youtube vids that can teach us?  should we just wing it?

Re: first dance

  • PUt on some soft music and dance away in your living room etc... so you have practice :D

That is what we are doing... unless you want to BOOGY down for your first dance... that is another story
we are doing a simple slow dance... FI just grabs me and attempts to dance to wahtever slow song comes on the radio... mind you has been difficult in a cast LOL!

it comes off today and we can start practicing in sincerity :D
  • I haven't heard that song. Is it slow enough that you can do the middle-school sway back and forth? If so, I really wouldn't worry. The first dance is more or less a private moment between you two, and from what I've heard from other brides, the rest of the world will just melt away. You won't notice or care if your guests are judging your dance moves--and they totally won't be!

If the song is slow enough, I would just put your arms around his neck, have him put his arms around your torso, and sway back and forth.

Another option to consider if you're afraid of awkwardness is only doing half or most of the song, and having it fade out so you don't have to sway for five minutes. But if you want to do the whole song, don't worry. Guests expect to watch the couple's first dance. They won't be offended or bored if you don't give them a good show. :)

  • i feel a little awkward dancing with him which is weird!  i think it's because i've never danced with anybody before (not even in middle or high school!!).  we can def do the "sway" becuase the song is pretty slow...youtube it, it's lovely.
  • FI and I have danced to ours in the living room just to practice dancing to the song. We prefer more of a ballroom dance hold b/c it feels less high school dance-ish. Then we just sway back and forth and kind of rotate slowly in a circle.

I am familiar with your song and think you will be fine without dance lessons.  :)

  • I think you will be fine without lessons too.  I was home last night and found a post-it where my FI had written down a possible first dance song: How lucky could one guy get by Sinatra.  I listened to it and I thought it might be cute, but I also worried about how to dance to it!  That is not middle school!  haha

Just did, and it's perfect for a first dance! I think you'll be fine with the sway, definitely. :)

  • thanks ladies:)
  • We went to Fred Astaire studio here. She said a lot of couples come in really close to the wedding and then don't have time to practice. However you could go and do an introductory lesson for kind of cheap and maybe get some basics down so you feel more comfortable. Actually FI is started to freak out a little about it and even though we paid a BUNCH of money for it, I told him if didn't want to do it we didn't have to. So far he is still on board but we will see......
