Beach Wedding Decor Ideas

OK, so I feel like the rule regarding "no structures on the beach" for a wedding in Hawaii is pretty widely known. And it kind of sucks. Anyways... due to budget restraints, I think we might end up doing a wedding on the beach (even though I REALLY wanted an arch with flowy ivory fabric!).

Any suggestions for ways to "dress up" a ceremony on the beach? I'm hoping we will be able to find a fairly private one. I hate the idea of all the guests (25 or less) standing... is there an alternative to that? Beach mats?

Also, what is the fine or 'punishment' if you DO have structures on the beach? I'm assuming the dep't who issues the beach permits does not go out and 'check on you'. If you have a fairly secluded beach, how would anyone know? Not trying to be a rule-breaker or clutter up the beaches... I just like to see how far I can push the limits. :)

I don't know anything about the 'punishment' for violating the rules, but I would strongly advise against planning for that.  It would be terrible to have your wedding interrupted and be asked to pay a fine, cancel the event, and/or receive a citation.  Breaking the law knowingly is a pretty silly way to start your married life.

If you REALLY want the ivory canopy, could you consider something creative, like having one piece of flowy fabric attached to 2 long sticks, and ask the MOH and Best Man to hold the sticks on each side of you during the ceremony?  Like this - but much smaller, and maybe only 2 sticks:

I also really like the idea of lining a walkway and altar with flowers or rose petals.  I've seen brides with a circle made of flowers, and you stand inside that ring for the ceremony.  Kind of like this:

I personally don't like the beach mat idea, because then they'll be staring up at you from the ground and it's a pretty uncomfortable position for your head/neck.  I would take advantage of your intimate setup, put a floral ring on the ground, and then have your guests form a circle all the way around you.  Keep the ceremony short & sweet, but that way everyone gets a front row seat and it's such an intimate way to show their support!

We were planning on using printed color parasols (6 to be exact). I actually bought them already and will also use them at home for our AHR, but I love Tanqs ideas.

@Tanq. You definately have some great ideas. Question Could you actually have someone hold the posts with a canopy or do you think this is still a no no? Thinking this would give our teen/young adult kids something to do instead of just standing there.

good call on the posts with a canopy! I would think it's okay to have someone hold it. We have a couple teenage nephews. Not that I want to engage them in manual labor during our ceremony.... haha

And good point on the beach mats. HMMM. The idea of everyone standing seems so disorganized to me though! I'm kind of anal about the straight lines / things not looking cluttered

Hey, it does say these are allowed:
    • Other non-obtrusive hand-carried wedding accessories
    • Small podium or cake stand, not to exceed three square feet in size

This is exactly what we are doing! We will have the flower ring, as well.
