Catering, BIG help...

My finace and I are getting married in October of this year. I am paying for the wedding (venue, flowers, centerpieces, etc). My parents are paying for the catering. Problem is, we both have a huge family. We have about 350 on the guest list, but are expecting about 250 total due to a lot of out of town family. Our wedding is classy, but we are having some problems finding an inexpensive catering company. I found this one (Chef Barones) and right now my mom and I are considering doing a ton of food trays instead of a sit down dinner. We will have veggies, fruits, cheese, and meat trays. Is this a terrible idea? The venue is charging $800 for the drinks alone (soda, coffee and water only). We can get the food for about $650. Is this a bad idea or good? I dont want it to look trashy...

Is this a day or night wedding?  Honest opinion: If this is a nightime, dress up event, I wouldn't be really excited about meat trays.  If it were an afternoon event (more like a luncheon), I don't think it would be as out of place.

my friend used be creative catering.. their food was good and the pricing isnt't that bad.  http://www.becreativecatering.com/index.html

I agree with PP,  i really think for a night wedding you should have more than meat trays..

i have a big family as well so we decided to only invite my aunts and uncles. no cousins. could that be an option?

could you make your reception start later (maybe 8:30 or 9:00) and just do a "cocktails and desserts" reception?

We are using Vonderhaars- they have reasonable pricing, we are doing a "pasta bar" which is definitely affordable yet still an actual meal

We also looked at Hilvers- which was inexpensive as well

    Good Luck in your search!

Our catering is being handled by our venue, but my company hired THIS (<---clicky) company for our Christmas party and it was really good. Don't know if you want to go the BBQ route, but the prices are very reasonable.

Thanks everyone! We decided to switch to a pasta buffet from Chef Barones. It comes with salad and breadsticks and two entrée choices for $5.95 a person.

    Thanks everyone!

That's a great deal.  I actually think chef barone is really good, they did a friend's wedding.

Also, my mom loves their hoagies haha.
