alternate to table runners?

I want to have something on the table like a table runner, but the places I've looked for runners don't have the right color green that I want.   The other thing that I've considered is just getting some thick (3-6" ribbon) to put on the tables in place of the runners.   Any other ideas?  If I were to get some fabric, can I just cut it to the length I want, or would I need to worry about sewing the ends and/or the sides?   Other things that will be on each table will be a cake stand with cake and 10-12 tea lights in glass holders and tented table numbers.  Thanks!

Veijes made some Damask ones.  She might be able to let you know how she cleaned up the edges, etc.

FWIW, I don't think you need a table runner, really.  What if you just got a nice green placemat type of thing for under the CPs?

I saw a very cute idea but don't have the picture. The designer wove wide colored ribbon down and across the table. It was very pretty.

If you didnt' want to sew, you can use iron on seam tape to do the edges and nobody would be the wiser.  Try SR Harris for the fabric.  It is a remnant warehouse (give yourself lots of time, they don't really have an organizational system!) where they get mill ends from top designers and clothing manufacturing companies.  They may not have enough fabric left to make a thousand dresses that company XYZ ordered, but they've got plenty for table runners, etc.  I've gotten all my upholstery fabrics there for a fraction of what I would have paid at Joanne's, Michaels, Hancock Fabrics, etc.

    This.

Stitch Witchery or Steam-A-Seam also work pretty well for this purpose (I used Steam-A-Seam on a pair of jeans that held forEVER).  It's what I'm planning to do because I do. not. sew.  Then if you want to clean up the edges, if they need it, you could always stick some ribbon around the edges either with double stick tape or more of what you did to create the edge.

I'm going to look into the woven ribbon idea for mine, too.  It could get really pricey, though, if you have to do more than a few tables.

Another alternative is to ditch the fabric and ribbon altogether and line up mismatched vessels and do something like a really long centerpiece with one type or color of flower uniting it all.  It depends on the look you're going for.
