Getting Ring Cleaned

I had completely forgotten about getting my ring steam cleaned and re-dipped before the wedding until today.

I just called and they said that if I dropped it off this weekend, it would be back by March 26th.  Our wedding date is March 27th.  I'm a little scared that it will not come back in time and I won't have my engagement ring for our wedding.

So, would you risk it, or not?

Re: Getting Ring Cleaned

  • I'd find a place that does it while you wait.

  • I think that you should go to some local jewelers and ask about getting it done. I take my ring to Robbins Brothers and they do the dip and steam clean in a matter of minutes.
  • I most certainly wouldn't!  We waited until afterwards because the same thing happened to us, only we had a week long window and still didn't wanna risk it.
  • I'd get it cleaned, dipping isn't necessary.

  • Hmm...I normally take it to the place I bought it because I get it done for free.

I'll have to call around to different jewelers.  Can anyone give me an estimate of how much it would cost?

I guess if I can't get it steam cleaned, I could just get them to clean it in the store the day before the wedding and that would make it decently shiny.
  • The places near me are all $45-$55 to get it dipped.  If you go in and pretend to be shopping for something they might clean it for free for you.

  • After hearing so much on this board about having to have rings dipped I made sure the white gold I get from my jeweler is the type that doesn't have to be dipped.  It can't be given the design I came up with.

You can also buy jewelry cleaner and do it yourself.  I do and the jewels sparkle afterwards.  Much cheaper.
  • We don't live in the state where FI bought my e-ring anymore, but the place I got my wedding band at said it would be $25 to have it cleaned and dipped.

  • I just googled "Rhodium Dip Cost" and saw people saying they've paid between $30 and $60ish for the service.

Excuse my ignorance but why would a ring need to be re-dipped and what is it dipped in?

ETA - just googled.  My ring isn't white gold hence my ignorance.

Jewelry cleaner is okay, but not ideal.  I was told not to use it if possible.  Also, rhodium (the dipping stuff) gives it white gold color, rather than a darker silver.

  • I got my e-ring dipped at Jared for $25. It was done within a few hours. And I didn't buy it there.

  • Yea, I guess I'll probably just get it cleaned at the jewelry store the day before.  It's not ideal, but I don't really have extra money to get it redipped right now.
  • I didn't know there was a kind of white gold that didn't have to be dipped.  What is it plated with?

  • Mine is platinum and it still gets rhodiumized. We had to do it after getting it re-sized, and we got it included in the warranty so that sizing and 'dipping' (this is the first time I've ever heard it called that) are free as often as needed.  The girls in the store said I might want to do it every year or so.

For those that are/were wondering all white gold jewelry is actually yellow gold with added metals (like Zinc) to give it the "silver" or "white" look and then dipped in rhodium to keep that look longer.  Over time some take on a yellowish-tint or turn yellow severely (depending on karat and such)  So you can get your rings dipped to make them look pretty and shiny again and more "white".  It's not really necessary to do ALL the time though.

Navy you should be able to find a store that will clean and possibly polish your ring while you wait (should take no more than a few minutes) for free.  All the local (and some chains) around here will clean for free.  IMO, no one should be paying for just a ring cleaning.  It's really easy and takes seconds.  :P  One local jeweler here will polish for free as well but they are local.  But a good polish and cleaning will make your ring look like new again--but it won't take away a yellow tinge or whatever you have going on.

HTH, I used to work in a jewelry store once upon a time.  :P

That's... odd. Mine is also platinum and one of the benefits I like of the platinum is not having to have ti redipped. Because platinum is... platinum. Not gold.

  • My ring has never taken more than 5 minutes to clean.  All 3 jewelery stores have always put it in the cleaner machine and it comes out beautiful.  (ben moss, local jeweler, and tiffany & co all did it the same way).  I've never heard of steaming it.

It's true, it won't yellow like white gold will, which is why FI picked platiunum as well, but the Zales person told me that most platinum rings still have a coat of rhodium to make them shiny, because platinum itself is somewhat dull.  This could be a complete and utter lie, I didn't follow up on it, we bought the warranty because it practically paid for itself with the re-sizing anyway.  She said they always re-do the rhodium after resizing (since it gets dull from re-sizing), and that over time the band may get dull and I can take it in to shine it up beyond the normal cleaning.  Again, might not be true, I didn't have reason to not believe her since Zales has been great so far, and it didn't cost us extra so I didn't care.  FWIW, I've had it a year now and it hasn't gotten dull beyond what the cleaning takes care of.

  • Also, similar to Mags, I use a soft toothbrush (acutally a baby toothbrush) and just scrub it a little under running water in the morning after I'm done getting ready to get all the lotion, shampoo, etc off it and it stays pretty nice.  I do notice a difference when it comes out of the sonicating thing at the jewelers, so it's obviously getting some kind of buildup, but it still looks shiny on a daily basis.

  • I've had my ring for a year and a half and haven't had it dipped yet. The lady said I should at my year "check-up" but I wanted to wait until my next one in April, closer to the wedding. They also send it away for dipping and it takes two weeks(!) to come back in general. It usually takes a little less time than that though.
