Average price for DJ?

We are having a brunch reception and only 3 hours. I have contacted a couple of places, but they want to do video conferencing since we can't physically meet with them, due to us planning a wedding from out of state. We don't even have a venue yet and I'm just wanting a general idea of pricing.. We don't need all kinds of crazy lighting show aspects since it will be during the day.. Any idea on general prcing norms?

Re: Average price for DJ?

  • I'd guess it to be $1k or less.  Especially since this is a bruch, you probably don't need the in-your-face high energy guys; you probably just want someone to play music and not screw it up.
  • I would have said about $1000 as well.  I am having an afternoon reception and wanted the same style (not as in your face, more afternoon with the ability to dance if you'd like to) and mine is around $1000.

  • I'd say about 1000.  Are you big dancers?  So you need a full formal dj? Could you get away with an ipod dj?
  • You have a PM ;)
  • $1000 for 3 hours is normal? So where do I sign up to be a DJ? would LOVE to make $333 an hour.
  • We are looking at a venue that requires you to choose from 4 of their djs from their vendor list, so hopefully they aren't overpriced. We just want some low key music with the ability to dance, if wanted.

It's easy to think that way, but that's not really the case.  I used to play in a band and there's a lot that you're not thinking about.

That's their gross so after taxes (assuming you're working with a real professional who pays his taxes), He's keeping maybe $750 for the job.  But out of that he needs to buy his equipment, lights, etc., maybe hiring someone to help him with his equipment, advertising, insurance, etc., etc., and allowing for set up and tear down plus meeting with you a couple of times, his hourly rate doesn't quite work out to be something even approaching what it may appear.
  • I wonder if you would have a hard time finding a DJ for 3 hrs... I thought most has a min of 4 hours.

  • I used Bob Albrecht with Fantasy Productions. The 4 hour package for one guy and no fancy extras was $950. I'm sure they could work with you for a 3 hour package.

:( not on my list that the venue approves.
  • How about Scratch Weddings?  We worked with DJ Alias in Oct and loved him.  For cocktail and reception it was about 1800
