Totally not wedding related....

FI and I adopted a puppy yesterday! We went to a shelter in middletown, ny and fell in love with a lab/german shepherd mix with a bit of doberman in her. She's 3 months old but huge! We named her Dana.

I've never been a dog person. EVER. i'm disgusted when our friend's pitbull insists on liking my toes - yet yesteday i joined the other side. I was kissing our new pup and letting her lick my entire hands. She's adorable. I'm head over heels in love with her.

Since she's a pup and a shelter one at that - she's still VERY calm and quiet. The only time she goes insane is when we take her into the backyard - she runs and runs. i'm sure we'll see her true personality come out soon!

I'm a mush as is FI. He's mr. "manly man" that insisted on a male dog, and yet yesterday he kept hugging her and called her daddy's little girl and daddy's little angel. We're such suckers! =)

I've totally become that person who brags about their smart dog and how beautiful she is.

Aww!!  Your pup looks a little like mine!  She's shepherd, rottie, boxer, and rhodesian ridgeback.  We got her DNA tested.  ha ha ha.  Congrats!!  Puppies are a lot of work but I love them!!  She is adorable.

One thing I will suggest is to start her in puppy kindergarten as soon as you can.  I think it's really good for their socialization, and I wish we had done it earlier with our pup (we waited until she was 6 months and just did dog obedience).  Oh!  Get some bitter apple spray.  It really does help to get them to not chew furniture when they get into their chewy stage!

Congrats! She is adorable! Dogs are the best thing. I can completely relate with bragging about your dog. Ours is like our first child and will always have a special stop on our hearts. Enjoy and take lots of pics, they don't stay small for long.

Thanks girls! and thank you for the suggestions! I need as much help as possible.
Dana and her siblings were rescused froma killing shelter in North Carolina. it brought me to tears just hearing that.

We woke up this morning and found her in bed with all her toys and my FI's addidas flip flops. she's been chewing very little but i'm sure the more puppy teeth fall out and adults teeth come in it'll be a more consistant habit =/

real quick question for all puppie owners - how often do they poop? i know potty breaks are pretty consistant - 5 mins after they eat, once they wake up, after playing a lot - she's peed several times outside and only once inside (in her bed which i think helped her like it more. she was resistant to go in it at first!) but we're yet to see her go #2
is it a once a day thing? i thought she would go once in the morning and once at night.

Our puppy would poop after eating.  Lexie was also rescued from a kill shelter in Georgia and brought up here for adoption.

Are you crate training?  I wasn't so into that at first, but now we love it (although she's 10 months and we're trying to wean her out of the crate and in the kitchen - aka 'puppy play area').  She'll totally go in her crate on her own to take a nap, and if we tell her to 'kennel up' she'll usually go in.

Our vet gave us this book about potty training, and it basically tells you to keep them on a leash with you at all time so they are never out of your site and can't do their business without you seeing them and taking them outside immediately.  Even if you're cooking and can't keep an eye on her it says to put her in her crate.

And, lots of toys that don't look like things you wouldn't want her to chew - so don't get her anyhting like flip-flops, shoes, socks, etc.  they don't know the difference between toy shoes vs. expensive shoes.

I'm by no means a puppy expert, but I'll see if I can think of any tricks or tips that might be helpful for you!

I also recommend crate training.  My pit-boxer is 1 1/2 and still has problems chewing.  We've tried to be the "nice parents" and block off areas in the house for when we were out and he still manages to find something other than the 5 different toys we left him lol.  I also think crate training helps get potty times scheduled and most dogs won't go in their crates.  Now that tebow is older he sleeps out of the crate on the floor in our room and just goes in the crate when we're gone.

I also second training classes.  Some people think the ones at petsmart are silly but if anything I think it's good for socialization.  Good luck and spoil her rotten!!!

so adorable!! good luck.. I rescued two dos a few years ago and they are the love of my life! they have such wonderful personalities and I spoil them rotten. I was only going to get 1 dog and I walked out of the shelter with 2!! I rescued a 1 yr old Mastiff/american staforshire terrier (like a pit) mix and a 1 yr old husky/german shepard mix. They both came crate trained, but now they sleep in my bedroom! I m such a mush!!!

So freaking cute! Love her! I am so glad that you adopted one from a shelter! I can honestly say that having a dog is great! We treat our dog like a child--which I know to some is weird--but really, she is like a 3rd person in our house. We have a beagle/hound mix. Her name is Abby. She is 10. I got her when she is a puppy!

Enjoy your new found love! It may get a little hairy at times but stick with it! They are great!

Congrats!!!!!! She is precious! I think it is wonderful that you rescued a shelter dog.  I adopted my furbaby from a shelter and he has brought so much joy to my life. FI and I treat him like our son. We always talk and brag about him to other people.  We must sound crazy to people that don't know us... lol.

I'll definitly look into crate training!

Many of our friends have dogs so hopefully she'll socialize with them. i took her to petsmart yesterday and she was curios around all other pets around there. one nipped at her and i thought "i get to hear her bark" but nope. she stood there and stared at the other dog like "whats your deal"

I have a friend thats a dog trainer so I'm going to hire her for help.

She seems very smart and picks up on things quickly so I'm crossing my fingers she stays this way!

P.S. she went #2 this morning - OUTSIDE. afterwards she came straight to our hands looking for treats, seems like she's getting the whole if-i-do-something-good-i-get-rewarded concept.
  • edited December 2011
oh and before ppl think we're going crazy giving her treats - she gets no more than 1 full one (the puppy sized ones, we break them into 3 pieces) a day. i'm very concious of not overfeeding her.

Congrats! I fell in love with a puppy this weekend but DH wouldn't let me get him. He was rescued from a high kill shelter in SC. So terrible.

But- good luck and enjoy the puppy stages! They go by way too quickly

Congratulations!!  And kudos for giving your puppy a loving home!  My FI and I adopted a 9-year-old shelter cat a couple of years ago - the older cats have a harder time getting placed - and we love and adore him to pieces.  I can't imagine my life without him now.  Someday when we have a house with a backyard we are totally adopting a shelter dog too!  It warms my heart knowing there are so many other people out there who open their hearts and homes to shelter animals.  :-)

Your pup is ADORABLE!!! That is funny because we are dog people, but FI always said that he would never want a small dog....Our pup will be 1 next month and she is 20lbs and he LOVES her....lol...she is his baby...Definitely get a Kong for her, they have the puppy Kong, and they are indestructable and keeps them busy...My pup is still a chewer, and especially loves socks and slippers....Best of luck to you guys!

Congrats on the puppy, she's precious.  I myself adopted an abused cat from a shelter 3 years ago.  For a whole year she wouldn't come near me but now I can't even take a shower without her follwing me.  Saving an animal is such a rewarding experience.
