July honeymoon suggestions

thinking about either a cruise or a trip to the carribean for our HM. However, July is hurricane season for the carribean so the only island that would be a safe choice is Aruba. Am I Better off to do Aruba or a cruise somewhere? Is Aruba "honeymoonIsh" or is it more party city?

Re: July honeymoon suggestions

  • I have not been to Aruba but I would truly not worry about hurricane season. First, the chance that a hurricane will hit the island you are on during the week or so you are there is extraordinarily slim. EVERY place has natural disaster issues. We just went to California, and sure, there was a possibility an earthquake would occur, but it didn't stop me from vacationing there. We live in the Midwest and get tornadoes more frequently than the Caribbean gets hurricanes, yet my actual city has never been hit by one.

Plus, if you get trip insurance, you really have nothing to worry about. We bought trip insurance for this past vacation in case we got sick or anything happened, and it was $100 for both of us, and would have refunded the entire purchase price of the whole trip, airfare and hotel included. If you buy the insurance and there IS a hurricane during that time, you can cancel and re-book free of charge.

Having said all that, there are places you can go without hurricanes. We did Hawaii for our July HM and absolutely loved it. Cruise ships can sometimes avoid the path of hurricanes if there is one. I have no info on Aruba but I know some ladies have been there so hopefully they can give you some feedback. At the end of the day, I'd go where you really want to go regardless of hurricanes, and I think it's always a good idea to get trip insurance when you're spending a lot of money on a trip.

  • i'm not a fan of aruba. do your research to see what  islands offers what and make your determination on that and then get yourself some trip insurance that would cover you in case there is a hurricane.
aruba's not immune to hurricanes. it's been hit before. it's certainly hit less often but it does happen.

  • Ditto pp.  My SIL HMed in Dominican Republic (at Iberostar Grand Bavaro) in July and had awesome weather.  I've been to Riviera Maya twice, including our HM, in Oct and had amazing weather.  Book where you want, just get travel insurance including weather to give you the capability to change if needed.
  • I've been to the Caribbean 5x in July and august and always have had awesome weather. Just get trip insurance. Hurricane season is like half the year so don't even worry about it.
  • We just got back from Jamaica (couples swept away in negril) last week and it was amazing .....as was the weather! Rained for 30 minutes around noon every day and then nothing but sun. Don't limit yourself to Aruba
