Local honeymoons

Has anyone ever had a honeymoon in their own town or region? My FI and I are just graduating college this spring and start paying our loans back 2 months after our wedding. We cannot afford a honeymoon and probably wont for atleast a couple years since our payments are over $700 a month each! I am really bummed about this. I have never been on a real vacation, or even too an ocean so I was always looking forward to the day I get married and go on my honeymoon. I think the only think we can afford is one weekend around the area we live.

What are some ideas for a local honeymoon?

  • If you're from MI you should know that the ocean is overrated haha.

If you're in Grand Rapids I'd try to swing a little mini-vacation in Grand Haven or some place on the water. Rent a little cabin for the night or weekend and explore the area. Or even in Grand Rapids make a list of places you've never been and check some of them out and get a hotel room. You can make anything into a "honeymoon" really.

  • I think your question is probably best asked on your local Grand Rapids board.........however, since I am in Michigan, here's what I'd recommend:

    - first of all, you will get money for your wedding. How much depends on whether people are getting you gifts. I know it sounds crass, but you can figure at least $20 per person for sure.  We figured $50  per person, but in this economy, actually got less when we married last August.

    - Petoskey is lovely, the Stafford Hotel is great, and Petoskey is a great little town
    - I personally love Saugatuck. Look into little B&B's, the town is adorable and reminds me a LOT of New England, where I loved for 6 years.
    - If you've never been to Chicago, it's wonderful.
    - If you guys are sports fans, we suspect the Tigers will be in the playoffs in October (yay!), and the Lions may have a home game on the Sunday after your wedding. If you've never been in Detroit during the playoffs, it is an amazing time. The Red Wing's season will have started then as well. If you keep your eye on the Lion's schedule, and the Red Wings, you may see that there are home games and want to come to Detroit. I love the Atheneum Hotel downtown, and it's walking distance to Comerica Park, Ford Field, and probably Joe Louis Arena as well. It's a romantic hotel, so you won't feel TOO left out if your hubby digs the sports more than you do.
    - Traverse City is also lovely, and while it might be past the prime color change time, you could do a winery tour or enjoy being near the lake.

It looks like you are getting married in October based on your timeline. Mackinac Island's season generally runs through Labor Day, so while the island is still open, the prices go down after school starts and tourists drop off.

I HIGHLY recommend looking into the areas you find interest in on www.tripadvisor.com. It is reviews by real customers of hotels and restaurants, and you can search by price, rating, etc.

Good luck. Glad you want to keep your money (maybe) in Michigan.
  • I am not from your area so I have no specific suggestions, but H and I really enjoy "staycations" in our city now and then. We have a really romantic inn here that we occasionally stay at for Valentine's or what not for a night or two. Try to make it like a vacation by going to new restaurants, doing something in town you normally don't, maybe splurging on a really nice room at the hotel if you can, etc. Your HM is all what you make of it.

  • How about Traverse City, Mackinac Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes, or Pictured Rocks?  You're pretty close to Chicago too.  Just get away for a few days together!

  •  Try checking out vacationstogo.com.  They usually have like last minute deals like 1 month prior.  So you can probably find a cruise for like $100-200 a person, and all food is included! Not sure what your budget looks like but its always an option :)

  • Depending on if you want to leave MI but not go too far, Duluth MN is a gorgeous area!!  There is lots to do there too (Gooseberry Falls, Light houses you can tour, Glensheen Mansion, etc.)!!

I'm not familiar with Michigan, but Minnesota I definitely am, PM me if you have any questions!! :)

I also ditto PPs to just do a few nights in a hotel, FI and I did that the weekend after we got engaged, and it was AWESOME!!  We went about 2 hours away and it felt so nice to just relax!! :)
