WTB a boy's Communion gift

We have several First Communions coming up. One is for DH's cousin/godson, this weekend. We usually give a cash gift when attending First Communions, but DH agreed with me that we should give him a little something in addition to the money since he's the boy's godfather.

Our immediate thought was a chain with a cross. I'm thinking that Macy's would have this, right?

I also suggested a nice wristwatch, even just for his mom to put away until he's a bit older, but DH didn't really like that idea.

Another thought was a medal of his patron saint ... he's got a saint's name, but it's not one of the popular ones and I've never seen that saint on a medal before.

Any other ideas? He likes video games and toys, but I don't know if that's appropriate. I personally remember getting photo frames and albums and little frilly keepsakes in addition to money/bonds, but we need to buy for a boy.

Also, any suggestions for stores, if you know of something besides a department store that'd have a good gift? We're in the Jersey City area and we're probably going to go out tonight to look for something.

Thanks!

Definitely money (like you said) and in addition to that I think a video game or something you know he likes would be a great idea, especially since the money he gets from the communion will most likely go into a bank account for him (which means he probably won't touch it/use it for awhile).

If you really want to get him a cross or something religious you have to make sure that no one else will be (when my FI's younger brother had his communion last year he received 4 different crosses... a total waste).

A watch or anything else that he can't use for a few years would be a waste (just get those gifts for him when he's old enough).

If he likes sports... what about tickets to a game that you and your FI can bring him to?  Even if it's just a minor/amateur league or college game?

I just got my Godson a cross w/ chain for his baptism at The Piercing Pagoda. They are really reasonable. So I gave a cash gift & then the jewelry b/c I was God mother. I also got a gift receipt just in case the parents didn't like the style.
You could also get a cross type item to put in his room. I bought a white ceramic cross for a communion boy once, in addition to the cash or savings bond gift.

A bible, rosary beads, cross etc. are all good ideas. Of course toys are more fun, but you're right I don't think they are particularly appropriate for a Communion gift.

I can't think of any actual stores to look in, but I'm sure you can find any of this online (if you have time to order it).

    Here are some more ideas-

I would buy something fun for him. He is going to be receiving those traditional gifts from others. But if you wanted to go with a traditional gift (understandable) I would just make sure the parents could return it in case multiples were given.

I think that a chain with a cross is a very appropriate gift for his Godson.

Thanks! Great ideas. We'll keep our eyes open when we go shopping, and get a gift receipt no matter what we choose.

I wouldn't feel right about giving a toy or video game. Some people bought me jewelry (some religious, some not so much) for when I was older and I appreciated it. (And probably appreciated it more later than I would have appreciated jewelry that fit when I was younger if that makes sense.) A nice blessed Bible is also nice.

I also received a glow-in-the-dark statue of Mary. Please don't get that, haha. I guess it was meant to be comforting at night, but it really creeped me out.
