Eloping in Hawaii...location/planner advice?

So FI and I are eloping in Hawaii sometime between January and May 2014. Neither of us have ever been so I don't know which island is best. For the ceremony, I would love the white sand (I've seen some pics of brides with greenery and I want sand) and for the stay, we want to be able to take surf lessons and scuba and the sort. We also want to tour volcanos but I think we would just have to fly to the main island for that. I also need photographer suggestions if anyone has any recommendations. Thank you!

The Big Island is the only island with active volcanos.  I am not sure if they allow marriage ceremonies on the beach.  Beaches may be public space and you may not cordon off areas of the beach from the general public.   There is a destination wedding group at left that may have better information.  There is also a local group for Hawaii.  Both groups are found at the lower left side of this page.
  • We got engaged on Maui and loved it. We snorkeled every day, hiked, surfed, ate good food, and found plenty of gorgeous beaches. No active volcanoes, but you can drive up to the top of Haleakala.
  • I also highly suggest you check out the Destination Weddings board here on TK if you haven't yet, there are a lot of really knowledgable ladies there :D
  • Thank you all for the advice! Destination weddings board is my next stop!
  • My fiance and I are going to elope on the Big Island in Nov 2014. I did a TON of research and fell in love with the Mauna Lani resort north of Kona. The coordinator there is super nice and accommodating, the weather is safe on that side of that island, the resort is beautiful but also affordable, and the Big Island has more climates than anywhere else on the planet (so I've heard, at least) -- you'll have white sand beaches at the Mauna Lani with this awesome black lava rock in places (= amazing pictures), but a short drive away are rain forests, volcanoes, black-sand beaches, even a mountain where is snows!

In January you'll see whales from ocean-front balconies.

Anyway, definitely worth considering and reaching out to them with questions.

They have been really flexible working with my budget (we're hoping to spend no more than $10,000 for our entire trip) and our semi-strange plans (we're going to elope and then do a party on the beach with friends!).

  • Hello! I lived on Oahu for two years, we used www.wedhawaii.com, we got married on the northshore near turtle bay(its quieter more secluded). Our package included a photographer, minister, the beach permit, two leis, and alot more we didnt need, because we lived close by, so the limo was unnecessary. It was 545$, they have cheaper and more lux packages. I recommend staying at Turtle Bay resort, but using wedhawaii for the ceremony on the beach two miles away, it was just the two of us, it was perfect and amazing. i ALMOST got on a surfboard in the dress, but it was so heavy when wet I couldnt balance correctly. If you want to see their pictures you can http://www.wedhawaii.com/photo-galleries/
--About Hawaii-- If you want epic jungle with no people go to Kauai, its super small. The big island is lots of open space, volcano, ranches, kona coffee plantations, quiet, lots of driving to colored sand beaches. Maui is super hippied out, quiet, waterfalls, tie dye, boar hunting. Oahu is where the action is, waikiki, nightlife, etc. Let me know if you have any questions, but like i said I HIGHLY recommend the north shore of oahu because its adorable/galleries/small towns, and then you can go to waikiki to party it up.
