Ivory Dress - White or Ivory Tux Shirt?

If I'm wearing an ivory dress, should he wear an ivory vest, shirt and tie? And should the groomsmen wear ivory shirts with their purple vest, tie and hanky? The salesman said that if we did that and the color wasn't exact, one of us may appear dirty. Although, I think if he wore white and I wear ivory, I would look dirty. Thoughts?

Re: Ivory Dress - White or Ivory Tux Shirt?

  • I wore a diamond white dress (an off white).  My H wore an ivory vest with an ivory shirt.  The GMs wore a dark purple vest with a white shirt.  When we matched the ivory shirt with the purple vest it made the shirt look weird so we went with white.

When all was said and done and everyone was standing next to each other, no one could tell the difference between my off-white dress, my H's ivory shirt and the GMs white shirts.

Here are some pics from our wedding.  Do any of us look "dirty" to you?

  • Not at all!! Thanks for sending the picture. That helps to see what it looks like. I was caught off guard when he said it would look "dirty".

The only time I think that it may look "dirty" is if the groom was in the Navy and was wearing his all white uniform.  Since that uniform is so stark white then the bride, who may wear an off-white or ivory dress, may look "dirty" next to her groom.  But even then I wouldn't think "oh the brides dress looks dirty".

Other than that, there is so little of the shirt showing on a tux that you really won't notice the difference.

  • I asked a similar question a few months ago and the general consensus was that the groom should wear a white shirt...

    That's what I opted for

[QUOTE]The picture below shows my daughter, wearing an ivory wedding dress, and her groom, wearing a white shirt.  Go with traditional white.  It photographs better.

</div><div>This.  I don't understand why the wedding industry tries to convince couples that if the bride wears ivory the men must wear ivory shirts.  An ivory wedding gown and an ivory shirt are very different.  Stick with classic white for the men.

  • I totally agree with JoanE! Menware house peeps were pushing us toward the ivory color since my dress is off white. Her reasoning was "So he won't outshine you and make your dress looked too yellow".

Well, no one can outshine me. I have the biggest dress in the room and the most make up! C'mon now! :p

  • The rule is if the brides dress is ivory, the groom and groomsmen should also wear ivory. They have an lite ivory microfiber tux shirt that is very nice. Men wearhouse has the old dark ivory shirt. Look a round to see who in your area. That carry that type of shirt. My companies drop ship any where.
