cake and drinks only reception

My fiance and I have decided that we would like to serve cake and non alcoholic beverages at our reception but we are unsure of what time we should have the ceremony and reception so that our guests do not expect a full meal. I was also wondering what kind of wording we should use on our invitations to notify our guests that they will not be served a full meal.
Thanks!

I'd be fine with it at ANY time of day, but I know I'm one of the very, very few on these boards that feel that way.  I guess I just don't relate "weddings" and "a meal."   It's nice enough, and my fiance definitely wanted a full meal at ours, but to me it's just a little bonus if it's there, but not a necessity.  Altering my eating schedule for one day, in order to attend  a wedding, doesn't offend me in the least.

However, i acknowledge that isn't the norm, so  I'd assume the "full meal" crowd could survive if they were getting cake and punch at, say, 2pm, or so, or maybe again at 9pm?   Those are definitely "after normal meal" hours and would make dessert acceptable.

I'd just put "cake and punch reception to follow" on the invitatons.  That says it as clearly as possible. Good luck and congratulations!

You should plan to have your ceremony between mealtimes (either mid-afternoon or late evening) if you don't plan to serve a full meal. Also, as PP said, you should indicate on your invitations or inserts that the reception will not have a meal.

Like PPs said, 2:00-3:00 is a pretty good time for this, since it's well between standard lunch and dinner times.  If you do it too late in the evening, people may expect liquor.

2:00 would be good for the ceremony. Even if it lasts an hour (unlikely, unless it's a full mass), you'll have 3-5 for people to eat and mingle, then they can go home and have dinner. Ususally these kinds of receptions don't have much/any dancing and only last about 2 hours.

You can put "cake and punch reception to follow" or "Please join us for cake in the fellowship hall after the ceremony." on your invitations.

1:30 - 3:00 pm is a good time for a ceremony.  It is in between lunch and dinnertime.

For the invitations, you can word it:

"Please join us immediately after the ceremony for a dessert reception"

"Please join us at ABC Club for light refreshments and fellowship"

"Reception immediately following"  - This is how most wedding invites I have received were worded - wedding/reception in same place

We are talking about an 8pm ceremony and noting on the invite "Dessert, Drinks and Dancing to follow".

The same could be done at 2pm. or even 10am.

I think as pp said. I think best time is after 8...so schedule ceremony after 8 p.m. It think you should say something like Cake and punch reception to follow. Be careful with the dessert wording- that sounds like there is going to be lots of desserts and maybe booze. That's implying something a little fancier then what you are having.

For evening event  dessert and drinks includes alcohol.
A day time event, one could serve alcohol but it is not expected.

I love a great cake. yum
