What if I can't meet the photographer?

So here's the situation:

We're planning a small destination wedding for May 2013.  It's actually going to save us a lot of money (when compared to having a large wedding, with all the family, where we live) but we still have a fairly tight budget.

I've run into a bit of a dilemma when looking for wedding photographers.  I know, from these boards and other sites, the importance of meeting your photographer before the wedding, doing an engagement shoot, etc.  First problem is that I have yet to find a local photographer that I like or is in my budget (travel costs come into play here), but have found several (that I /love/) closer to our destination location.  Second problem is that there would be absolutely no time or money available to meet those photographers closer to our destination, much less have them do engagement photos for us.

So, what's a girl to do?

Pick someone whose work & portfolio you love.  Work with them via email & phone so you get a feel for their vibe.  Meet them in person once you get onsite the week of the wedding to establish a rapport.  Many people are just fine not having met their photographer ahead of time.

Also you can always ask about travel costs...depending on how far away it is...our photographers are only costing us 100$ extra for travel and our wedding is 5 hours away.
